Maybe it is more buried and im just focusing in on it cause it bugs me.harmless wrote:I feel like all of the screaming you describe at the end of the song, stupidmop, is far more buried under the music than the stuff at the beginning. Maybe it depends on your speakers / headphones? I think it all sounds way better than it did in Wrigley, anyway. I don't mind the yeah yeah yeah on the end of a line, it's when it's a prominent part of the chorus that it annoys me.

the shrieking every single song probably did him no favors either.stupidmop wrote:Ed sounds so rough to me on this compared to getaway. I like this song from the second verse till the 'always something never nothing' verse/bridge ( i actually kinda like whatever the pianos doing there) it's sandwiched with stuff i hate on either side though, thereby making it way too long for me.
The jyeah yeah yeah's after the great northwest line sounds so bizzare to me, i was convinced it was a skip in the song cutting out a word first, now it just sounds autotuned to me i dont know why. They're also sound awkward as hell, as do all the hilarious things ed is shouting at the end, she's true? 'uncontrollable like you' or whatever. I feel like they would have worked alot better if they were more buried in thr music like whatevers going on in the LTRP outro. The 'no repair in sight' verse just sounds like ed messily screaming over drums with no groove to me.
Meh, I tried Stip! Just don't feel it.
I think the chain smoking came out in full force that tour.Juvenal wrote:Yeah wtf did do during that tour? Self-destructive ain't the half of it.stip wrote:that's why I don't think those first 3 records will ever be topped for me. No amount of improvements in craft, songwriting, technique, will be able to make up what was, for me, the most elementally powerful voice I've ever heard. They can come close. But not all the way there. Even by No Code it had already changed too much. i blame the 95 tour, in part.
The important thing is you tried. Of all the new songs this is the one I think is going to be improved the most by the clean CD copy.

Do you think the different will be that great between the leak version and the CD version? I'm starting to believe the leak is pretty close to the truth.stip wrote:the shrieking every single song probably did him no favors either.stupidmop wrote:Ed sounds so rough to me on this compared to getaway. Not huge, but of all the songs we've heard this one seems to be the busiest, have the most going on, have the most atmosphere, and so little changes in terms of how clear something sounds could end up making a difference, especially since I suspect all the noise we're getting throughout the song is meant to have a lot of clarity, rather than just being a wash of noise. I could be wrong.

I've only heard this at Wrigley, so perhaps you're right...but wow. That's a really bold claim. Are you really prepared to put this against the Thunder Roads & Where The Streets Have No Names of the world?

well those might the phd programs, but the studio version is such a massive improvement from wrigley, and other than a few clumsy lyrics at the start this gets everything right in spades

Well if nothing else you've definitely managed to elevate my interest in the studio version, so I thank you for that. My anticipation for the record has been pretty non-existent for the past few weeks. I'm feeling a tinge of intrigue for the first time in a while...

From the Q review:
The title track throws every stadium-rock trick they've perfected over the past two decades into its four-minute 20 second running time...It's excellent, and its perfectly executed pendulum swing between intricate and epic sums up the rest of the album.

so far it's a really good record. A few more strong songs make it a great record. Every song is at least good.

What if you like both of them well enough, but tend to prefer covers of their work? Or you like them but you wouldn't call yourself a "fan" because you only own one or two albums by each?stip wrote:and if you love springsteen and u2 you'll love thisLament wrote:Wow.stip wrote:this song is a master's class in how to write an anthem

For me, the best part of the song is Ed singing 'And with no repair in sight' onwards. Positively hair raising.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

well, how would you like to see pearl jam cover a song written around all their best tricks?durdencommatyler wrote:What if you like both of them well enough, but tend to prefer covers of their work?
