If this by now way too-long-in-the-tooth exercise has reinforced anything, it’s that we’re really fucking old.

Pearl Jam is the only one I could have left, I think.

I'm perfectly fine with Neil being the highest on the final list of artists from my list. He wasn't #1 on my list but is probably the all-time greatest songwriter/performer of anyone of my list. I just listened to the new Rust Bucket LPs yesterday and just lost myself in it.

I intentionally left Neil of my list because 1) I've only heard about half of his body of work and 2) for this exercise I tried to balance my list with best artists and artists I most listen to.

Basically, I felt like including Neil in this one would be sort of disingenuous because though he is actually one of my favorite artists of all time, I still have a ton to discover and I don't listen to him as often as the others on my list.

All that to say, I'm all in favor of Neil being in the top 5. It's where he belongs.

I intentionally left Neil off my list because I don't enjoy listening to him

If that's what the final five are I would say the two biggest overlooked artists to not even make top 87 are Queen and Bob Marley & the Wailers.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

We should recommend albums from artists in our personal Top 10 that didn't make the final list:

1. Jason Molina - This is tough, but if I was trying to select an entry point, it might be "Nashville Moon," the first disc on the Sojourner box set.

4. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I know a lot of people are already familiar with BPB, but if you haven't listened recently, his latest record "I Made A Place" was his first with original, new songs in a while and it's really good.

8. Stella Donnelly - She has one LP, and it's called "Beware of the Dogs," and I highly recommend it.

9. Will Johnson - He's got a deep, deep catalogue, but from the last five years or so the album I keep returning to is "Hatteras Night, A Good Luck Charm."

10. Phish -
Spoiler: show
Right now we’re gonna tell about you where we come from. It’s far away from the Love Auditorium, where we come from, far, far away. It’s a different sort of place than, than this area. If you could come with us now, to a place, also far away. This place is called Gamehendge.

So, what we’re gonna do right now is, we’re gonna sort of travel back in time, through eons. Tumbling years going past, and you picture the calendar, you know, 1960, 1800, 1320, 1041, 481 AD. The Goths are rebelling against the Romans at Adrian Opal, and we’re still tumbling back through time. We’re going back all the way past that, and suddenly you find yourself floating serenely over this huge forest. You’re kind of floating through space, and you’ve tumbled back through time. You’re tumbling over this huge forest, and, Waaaatch out, there’s a big mountain over there, and you better watch out for that, you don’t want to crash into that You’re going over this huge forest that seems to go on forever and ever, and as you as you drift along, Wooooooooooah, you’re kind of coming along and suddenly the edge of the forest comes into view. You see this field stretching off into the distance, and and you’re kind of coming down. Your feet are starting to come down to land, and now you look off into the field and see a huge, vast green field stretching off into the distance as far as the eye can see. You know that you’ve landed in Gamehendge.

And, you see three Lizard people, coming out of the woods. You see them, and now you know there is a serene feeling. These people are living in peace and harmony with nature, and its the early years of Gamehendge before the evil King Wilson came and took it over. It’s early Gamehendge. These three people are going. They’re walking across the field doing their yearly ritual. They’re climbing across the field. They’re walking up, and you follow behind them because you know that they’re going to sing the ritualistic song thanking the gods in heaven for this beautiful field, mountain, and forest. So, here they go and suddenly off in the distance you see looming before you a huge black Rhombus, a huge black Rhombus, floating in the middle of the field, that green field and this enormous black Rhombus. You go up, and you you do like the Lizard people are doing. You go to the Rhombus, and you take your pack and you open it up. You take out your three-prong instrument of climbing, and you start to spin it around quickly [musical simulation]. You hook it on the Rhombus, and you slowly start to [musical simulation and grunts] climb. And, then you are on top of the Rhombus, you are sitting on top of this huge Rhombus with these three weird Lizard people, and suddenly they all start to open their mouths, er, muzzles in song, singing to the parting clouds above them.

This is what they sing...

I feel like a dunce for leaving out Burt Bacharach, one of the all-time great songwriters, but would anyone else have voted for him?
