Starting DS9 from the beginning. Hard to believe but it’s been over 15 years since I watched it.

Captive Pursuit was the first great DS9 episode. I wish there was more Tosk.

The Passenger was a great example of the difference between classic and modern Trek. A new Starfleet security officer is assigned to the station and clashes with Odo. Sisko explains he needs to figure it out with Odo. The guy apologizes to Odo and is an important part in stopping the antagonist. If it was modern Trek the guy would have been unredeemable asshole and probably would have gotten himself killed in some grotesque manner and it would have been clear he deserved it. Probably played for laughs. The crew wouldn’t give a shit.

Finished the first season of DS9. It definitely had its share of growing pains but by the end of the season it really started to come together. The episode Duet was top shelf Star Trek. I think out of all the characters Kira got the most chance to shine. Poor Dax was basically just the object of dudes desire for most of the season. Avery Brookes is a limited actor but when’s he’s on low boil mode he’s great and all his interactions with Jake are perfect. He’s really the only captain (to be) that is believable when kicking ass. O’Brien was solid as always and I love how alien Odo was in the beginning. Julien was appropriately annoying but still likable in spots. Quark excellent. I was hoping I would have forgotten more plot points but I still enjoyed myself. On to Season 2.

I really enjoyed Season 2 but I’m not sure there was really any essential episodes. I don’t recall feeling one way or the other about Dax in the past but I enjoyed her episodes I wish she had more to do. Still a lot of Kira-centric episodes though I gotta say the Bajorian stuff was kind of a dud. I forgot how funny the show was....I think Quark had three romances and they were all great. Julien can be hilarious too when he’s romancing. That Cardassian lawyer who was “defending” O’Brien had me rolling. I find myself wondering if Garek was the inspiration for Varis on GOT. The guy who plays Dukot is amazing. Dominion coming next.

The Season 3 two part Improbable Cause & The Die Is Cast episodes of DS9 were next level. Kind of like Yesterday's Enterprise on TNG when the show first really showed it's full potential. So good.

The Visitor definitely hits different after having kids. It's gotta be a top 10 all time Star Trek....maybe top 5?

It's pretty startling the leap in quality the show makes in Season 4.

Yeah you're right but not in the way I think you mean. It wasn't that Worf was so awesome he raised the level of the show to new heights it was that by having an additional character to write for they were forced or allowed to scale back on repeating the same DS9 tropes to death. Season's 1-3 they had a ton of repeat storyline episodes. You know Ferengi being zanny or Quark meets a girl or Kira learns a lesson or something is wrong with Jadzia's symbiont or Bajor internal politics/religion or what I like to call the mind fuck episodes where a character is suddenly in a altered reality where it takes to the end of the show to find out who was fucking with them and then everything goes back to normal (or does it...dah dah daaahhhh). I mean yeah every Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror series has a mind fuck episode but DS9 went to that well over and over. It wasn't really a bad thing they were usually solid episodes but by adding Worf they could spread that out more and not beat those ideas to death. Really it was the change in show runners and the elevation of the best writers while some of the dead weight went to Voyager.

Also Babylon 5 (a superior series) was a fierce competitor, and even more so by season 4, and DS9 kept stealing good ideas from B5.

Ack! I’d love to defend my beloved DS9 but I’ve never watched Babylon 5. It looked horrible back in the day but I’ve heard good things. Someday maybe.

I love when Worf refers to Quark as The Ferengi. The distain in his voice makes me laugh every time.
