Even though it's not a song I regularly seek out, Insignificance is a masterful piece of writing. I'm more likely to feel like listening to once, which is more immediate and demands less, but Insignificance is the better song and gets my vote

Musically they are both great in their own way - and show a band that grew amazingly in 10 years. Insignificance edges out Once due to having a more interesting lyrical approach.

I know everyone loves Insignificance, but I've never loved it. Could be my general Riot Act hate. Or is it on Binaural?

it's because Binaural flatten out their expansive sound, so that even huge songs like Insignificance end up sounding claustrophobic and curiously muted. It's definitely a choice

I spent so long hating Binaural and Riot Act. Even now, when I've come to enjoy them more, they still mush into one era of Pearl Jam where I just wasn't listening very closely.

with the exception of No Code every post vitalogy album from yield to ST had a period where it was my third favorite and I liked it more than Vs. Backspacer -> now it tends to be the 4th spot, before settling into my overall rankings.
