I hear you. Unthought Known feels like it's effortless compared to Lightning Bolt though. Which is saying something.Jaeti wrote:Unthought Known is definitely clearly trying to be something special. And it doesn't fulfill the promise of its first half, at least not on the record. But it still almost gets there for me; and, live, it definitely gets there for me.
Got Some, on the other hand, never gets there for me.

I like Backspacer´s production but i dont like the mix. Also, its brickwalled to death...While LB´s songs are good to half baked and the production is horrible, specially how the drums sound. Its the worst PJ sounding album for sure.

Re: 104. Got Some vs. Unthought Known
Had to re-listen to both of these. Got Some was surprisingly flat for me. Unthought Known was better and gets my vote (even with the chalk-on-blackboard 'Gems and Rhinestones' line).
I appreciate Jaeti's point that UK was reaching for something big.

Both of these songs deserve to lose.

Got Some but just barely. Don't really love either of these, but Got Some is a bit fun while Unthought Known feels like it's always about to push to a higher level but then never does.

This is a good way of describing UK!The Town wrote:Unthought Known comes off as such a try hard, forced song to me. Very un-PJ
Got Some all the way
And agree easily Got Some here.

I went for a listen, now I'm changing my vote to Unthought Known. Ed kinda grates in Got Some, IMHO.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I don't especially care for Unthought Known. But it's so much better than Lightning Bolt.

Both songs suffer from the solo being after the first chorus. The catharsis comes too early and the rest of the song just sort of happens.

GREAT insight to Unthought Known, I had never considered this but now I'll never forget it. Can't say the same is true for Got Some though. The final outro builds in energy until it reaches a satisfying climax.Monkey_Driven wrote:Both songs suffer from the solo being after the first chorus. Re: 104. Got Some vs. Unthought Known
I picked Got Some but could have gone either way. Neither is top tier Pearl Jam for me but both are on the higher end of the scale for me on what Backspacer offers. Unthought Known and its sibling Amongst the Waves kind of shoot for this U2-ish hugeness, and it just seems very transparent rather than it feeling like a genuine product from the band that we may be used to. It’s just not delivered naturally. I think both benefit from the live performance because that somehow does feel more natural.
Got Some is that sort of vintage Pearl Jam early album rocker. A song that starts high on your list but maybe works it’s way down over time. Given Backspacer, it has never moved down the list for me on this album, but I don’t really seek it out anymore either other than to tip my hat to the existence of this album largely through this song and maybe a couple of more on the album. Got Some gets the vote because it feels less forced on the album.
I wouldn’t say either are bad songs though.
