Said it before but I'd love to see Daughter win this whole thing.
Maybe next year.

I’m good with either one. Maybe more likely to listen to Hail Hail.

It has also always felt a little odd to me that Daughter is so much more well regarded in these parts than Small Town, given their similarities. It feels (to me) that if you love one you're pretty likely to love the other

I don't think the songs are very similar at all, other than they have some acoustic guitars.
This is a tough round for me, as I think both are in the conversation for the band's very best song.
I don't really mind which wins.

Re: 232. Hail Hail vs. Daughter
I also love both but see enough difference in them to understand loving one and not the other. Daughter is way more of a typical Pearl Jam song that just happens to be acoustic. Elderly Woman feels more like an Eddie solo song. Daughter is riff based (A Pearl Jammy Stone riff!) and Elderly Woman is more of a traditional chord based song.
Daughter is closer to a rock song than an acoustic ballad. I can kind of imagine Daughter with (only) electric guitars.

They’ve never tagged Madonna’s Ray of Light with Elderly Woman thoughstip wrote:It has also always felt a little odd to me that Daughter is so much more well regarded in these parts than Small Town, given their similarities. I dont they are similar at all...i what sense? the acoustic guitars? Daughter is a super complex song, with a great use of the band's talents. It also has a fucking cool outro and a very cool country solo.stip wrote:It has also always felt a little odd to me that Daughter is so much more well regarded in these parts than Small Town, given their similarities. Small Town is more of a straightforward acoustic number.

Re: 232. Hail Hail vs. Daughter
Genuine question: What makes Daughter super complex? Sounds pretty simple without that much variation to me.

Re: 232. Hail Hail vs. Daughter
well, maybe not super complex, but at the time it was a very different song for the band. Kinda reggae, kinda country. I love all the elements the band give, The acoustic guitar, the country solo, the upright bass....even the drums. And the outro is wonderful.

I agree that Daughter has way more going on: alt tuning, funky strumming rhythm, lots of cymbal work, GREAT guitar solo that lifts the song up without losing its grounding, spooky outro.

Also a classic stone connecting riff!tragabigzanda wrote:I agree that Daughter has way more going on: alt tuning, funky strumming rhythm, lots of cymbal work, GREAT guitar solo that lifts the song up without losing its grounding, spooky outro.
That little ditty connecting the two guitar parts is fantastic.
Mike mentions how good stone is at that in PJ20. he's spot on.

You mean before “she holds the hand”? Yeah that part is awesome, and fairly advanced pop/rock songwritingStrat wrote:Also a classic stone connecting riff!tragabigzanda wrote:I agree that Daughter has way more going on: alt tuning, funky strumming rhythm, lots of cymbal work, GREAT guitar solo that lifts the song up without losing its grounding, spooky outro.

Re: 232. Hail Hail vs. Daughter
I happen to love both songs and I probably rank Small Town higher but I also don't really think of them as similar songs.
