Song of the Moment: Sirens

Based on the line "I hold you close, so much to lose," I'm guessing you all are putting more thought into these lyrics than Ed ever did.

Sirens will have emotional depth if I have to completely rewrite the meaning in my head, godammit.

Even though it's vague there are specifics that leave me unconnected completely. I'd like certain lines to be slightly or completely different to make it the song I want it to be. I understand the few people that have drawn a parental feeling even though it's about a partner. It's an avenue that I would like in the song but it isn't there.

Maybe the lyrics were revised to attract a universal audience.

It really does sound like the lyrics were tampered with to make it a more commercial success or something, even though it wants to be a song about death. The "I pull you close" section sounds like something Brendan O'Brien probably added. We have two choruses, one written by Ed "I didn't care before you were here..." and the other written by BoB. It's speculation but a real possibility.

Lol i doubt it. Ed just probably thought it sounded good. There's enough stuff there that it means something to himself when he sings it but not enough that all his fans know exactly whats going on in his life.

FD has the same thing going on, standard mushy shit and then something about demons dancing.

I don't think the demons dancing stuff is that annoying, because generally we know he means "inner demons" (or I'm fairly happy that's the interpretation). We can assimilate that into our own experience if we want to, or if we like the song enough. But this is different. This courts specifics. This is an instance in which Ed just isn't giving enough context to actually make sense of the lines. He's courting specifics here but not divulging. It's not that I'm begging for the gossip but I would like to assimilate the song into my experiences, and for most of it I can, know what I mean?

Have you read the 'original' lyrics for immortality from those two orpheum (i think) shows. I always prefered them (one more than the other but i can't remember which). Still have random placeholder lyrics that make no sense, but it's very clearly about contemplating suicide, the albums ones mean the same thing but we're maybe changed to make it less obvious, or relate to kurt cobain i dunno.

Maybe it would be weird, except for the fact that as fans, we all jump to the "This is about Ed" conclusion way too quickly. It's a song about a relationship, and it could be a fiction account using details of his life. I reckon it comes from his emotional state now, even if the story is old.
