And once outside the undertow
Just you and me, and nothing more

Thats a great one.
Fuck yes! I love that line. It might be the most romantic thing Ed's written.

I was initially talking about the lyrics. But the more we talked about it the more I realized I was wrong. That's the trouble with thinking out loud via keyboard.

yeah, its super good. I like how ATW goes from something romantic to also, what it seems, a reflexion of time..

Totally. I know some balk at the "religious" imagery but I love the twist Ed puts on it by saying "I can feel like I have a soul that has been saved." As an atheist that line has always been really moving and powerful for me. Because there are so many things in life that do replicate or duplicate or replace that religious feeling but are secularly sacred. Ed really nailed that and I really feel it every time I listen to the song.

Cold Confession paints a remarkable picture lyrically and gasp is helped along by the music in a Crazy Mary kinda way.

All of this

He scared himself, into a trance
ducking down rivers, secretly
He floated out, into the ocean
of his worst dream, of his rough sea?
of all the men he could trust
he was not one of them, always hurting himself
this scars and seams?, the wounds are tone
whatever time had healed, it's still too cold
A life washed away, like words in the sand
and when the high tide came, so went his plan
a troubled past, a troubled future
a troubled way leaning on a bar stool
when strobelight stop, he finally saw
navigation towards a brand new course
but to himself the memory clear
cold confession only, that only he could hear

He let himself scream, he let himself cry
let himself reach the other side
there was on christ, there was no cross
just forgiveness, allowed himself
accepted the past, then set it free
oh and it ran off like an animal with ease
he holds the bruise?, he holds their star
in his pure arms, in his clear heart
He's safe now, he's back in her breast
he saw his path, and changed it, chased it, at last
