Go to any city park (that’s not littered with used heroin needles) and unmasked kids are crawling all over each other on the big toy. They’re fine.

Baseball isn't part of my reality. It's boring and regulated by idiots. Covid has really solidified how little I want to give money to stupid shit. It's definitely been a positive change for me.spike wrote:i'm heading to wrigley in a couple weeks. gonna be a full house, huh?verb_to_trust wrote:Up to you, buddyspike wrote:cool, back to normal tomorrow then?

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
The scope of India’s COVID-19 pandemic is swiftly becoming unimaginable. There are currently 300,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases per day in the country, and an estimated 2600 people a day are dying from the virus. Hospitals are buckling under the increased patient load, with numerous reports of beds and oxygen supplies needing to be shared or rationed.
This drone footage shows a mass crematorium on April 23, as traditional facilities have become unable to handle the number of incoming bodies. 186,000+ people have died from COVID-19 in India since the start of the pandemic.

Obviously it's a crisis, and I imagine poverty levels might have something to do with it, but I could be wrong.
But to put it in a strictly numbers perspective, US has about 23% of the population of India. So 300,000 cases a day for India is equal to about 69,000 cases a day for the US. And we've been doing that and beyond for months.

Also with regard to deaths, 1,762 out of a million people have died from corona in the US. In India, only 140 people out of a million have died from it . The average for the whole world is 400 out of a million .knee tunes wrote:Stickman wrote:The scope of India’s COVID-19 pandemic is swiftly becoming unimaginable. So , although India is on fire now, they are still in 119th place of countries regarding per capita deaths from corona.

We also have something like an order of magnitude more ICU beds per capita than they do. They can have an issue with overloaded hospitals with a far lower baseline of infections and serious illness than us.knee tunes wrote:Also with regard to deaths, 1,762 out of a million people have died from corona in the US. They did pretty well for the last year (vitamin D levels? BMI?) Who would predict they'd be the next hotspot as opposed to take your pick in the Arab or African regions?
The good news is they are also anglophone and so we can read along as their bluechecks moralize about current state as being a failure of individuals or the state doing whatever their preferred intervention would have been.

I just assumed their bureacrats were more flexible than ours. Perhaps not as much as I hoped.simple schoolboy wrote:We have an estimated 70 million excess vaccines based on what we ordered. The contracts prevent the pharma companies from selling the earmarked vaccines overseas, but it seems that (almost) everyone who wants one here has received one.
Shouldn't we waive the contracts at this point and send some of these to places like India? If they are already paid for, why would the pharma companies protest? If we end up with 70 million + expired vaccines because of bureacratic inflexibility, don't we suck and make China seem a more reliable partner?
How much of the, "we gave you hydroxycholoroquine and PPE when you asked for it" is misdirected coping? Its really not hard to be better than the FDA.

As is the case with covid, it was likely a combination of things. Failure of leadership to properly manage rollout, population density, super spreader events. There was a big religious pilgrimage back in January that could’ve gotten the virus all over.

Verb is somehow getting more of these right than one would expect:

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/23/mit-res ... study.html
Key Points
- An MIT study showed that people who maintain 60 feet of distance from others indoors are no more protected than if they socially distanced by just 6 feet.
According to the researchers, other calculations of the risk of indoor transmission have omitted too many factors to accurately quantify that risk.
“We need scientific information conveyed to the public in a way that is not just fear mongering but is actually based in analysis,” the author of the study said.

What's stupid is to try and argue people shouldn't just be able to assess their own risk and do whatever they want.

Verb, it’s not just about the individual, but also keeping hospital capacity under control. We aren't there yet from vaccinations or natural immunity. You know this!

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
Hospitals have had a lot to deal with at various stages of the pandemic but one thing I don't believe ever truly happened was hospitals becoming overwhelmed. And now, when we have vaccinated the majority of the vulnerable and most vaccination events are encouraging walk ins, we are supposed to be as terrified as ever? I really have to wonder if some of you guys are ever going to snap out of it.spike wrote:Verb, it’s not just about the individual, but also keeping hospital capacity under control. You know this.

no one's as terrified as ever. thinking has evolved as more and more is learned. or i guess devolved in your case.
