Hummus is what suburban white people tell themselves is healthy and delicious when trying to eat better. It is also what they use to say they like "middle eastern" food.

Very popular in Palestine and Israel. Palestinians consider it a must, and ‘their’ invention.

and...

«Nearly 70% of Israelis have hummus in their refrigerator, 93% of Israelis eat it weekly»

we went to a friend's house for dinner two weekends ago. they are 1st gen Palestinian. I was going on and on about how much i loved the food from that end of the globe, and he and his wife insisted that we come over. part of the dinner (among many traditional palestinian dishes) was homemade hummus.

Was the hummus good? Which other dish impressed you the most?

my wife's vegetarian, and so mostly everything was vegetarian too. the tabbouleh was unbelievable. so so good. and this thing called maqluba (which was this rice and fried vegetables served upside down) that i could've eaten all day. and they made their own shawarma, which i really want the recipe for.

now i'm hungry.

There is a huge gap between homemade hummus and store bought. Some of the best I’ve ever eaten was from a Lebanese market here. But I’ve never had anything that qualifies as good from the store.

This is true. There are exceptions like Chris H getting some authentic stuff, but it's a bit of a never ending fad in the burbs.

Personally, I don't care for it. I'll eat it no problem if that's what there is, I'm not picky, but I will always choose the meat option if available.

Do you primarily consider hummus a vegetarian option to full meat dinners, and not as a side dish or a dip?
