I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I never followed professional wresting, but until recently assumed it was an exclusively American thing. It seems to have had a significant European and Japanese following among a certain age group. I don't get it, but wouldn't mind being schooled on this.Anders wrote:A classic for me:

Re: The Random Picture Thread
Cable and satellite tv blew up here in the mid 80s, there was VHS and MTV, and for us kids at the time, it felt revolutionary.
I think my grandparents only had some very basic influence from American culture, whereas my parents grew up on Elvis and rock n’roll, and saw quite a few American movies.
In a way this influence from the US peaked in the 80s, even if it was before the internet, and the world we live in today.
The American movies of the 1980s were magical, my brothers and I rented three every weekend. MTV with music videos were everywhere. Reagan was bringing an end to the cold war, and a better future for our neighbours further east in Europe.
Wrestling has never been mainstream in Norway. The only time I can ever remember talking about it publically, is from that era. In my primary school nothing was cooler than wrestling. The WWF was pulling out all the punches at the time, with some legendary performers and shows.
For most it ended there, but I’ve followed it ever since. Nothing else has that unique blend of showmanship, atlethicism, larger than life characters, humor, and more. It can be boring as nothing else (WWE Raw atm), but when wrestling is at its best, when it’s gold, I love it.
Edit: to fully answer your question. I’m no expert on it, but like you I know wrestling has a large following in the UK, Germany, Mexico and Japan. In different ways it’s part of their culture, especially in Mexico and Japan. They have long traditions with it, and their style, shows and audience can vary greatly from the US.

Rocket-triggered lightning launch site at Mosquito Lagoon near Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center), Florida. Shooting a rocket into overhead thundercloud causes a lightning strike. A fine copper wire trailing from the rocket creates a path for the cloud's electric charge. (1991)
