Re: Fat Acceptance
i actually think this is on pointBurtReynolds wrote:- I don't think you can rewire people to not have some negative attitudes towards unattractive people, and many fat acceptance types think everything is a social construct and that you can do just that. You can't, but that doesn't mean you should just go around calling people "Big ole fatty McFattersons" either.
- Though its not all about attractiveness, let's face it: it is most of it. It's probably the biggest "privilege" there is, besides maybe wealth. If you're fat, you ain't got it.
- Not sure how many fat acceptance people really think obesity is medically ok, so that sounds like a straw man to me. Of course, the few that are really arguing for that are idiots.
not so much from an addition standpoint, but i have at least somewhat lived the depression side of not being able to motivate yourself to change from an exercise and better diet standpoint...and it eventually caught up to me until i was able to make the necessary changes and become model thin
i can see both sides of this, but only to a certain degree
some fat people are gross tho for real
i'm drinking sweet tea today so smd

Re: Fat Acceptance
I really don't care about the aesthetics of a morbidly obese person. I care that they're slowly killing themselves in plain sight, often while being clapped along by enablers and "safe space" devotees. This is about health, not appearance. Physiology doesn't care about your feelings.

Re: Fat Acceptance
I am not arguing that being fat is healthy or conducive to long life. I’m just asking for a little bit of kindness, sympathy, compassion and humility.

Re: Fat Acceptance
Yeah nice work, Tree. That'll work.
When a heroin addict checks into rehab, we take their drugs away.
When a morbidly obese person is in the process of eating themselves to death, we give them a family meal, a Big Gulp and a safe space to have at it.
I'm glad our resident addiction expert is so switched on.

And don't talk to me about kindness or compassion. You have no idea how charitable I am towards those that cannot help their position. You're just attaching an emotional response to something that is pure science.

Re: Fat Acceptance
Dude, again, I'm not arguing that it's healthy to be fat. If a fat person wants to be healthy then it's better to lose the weight, no question. But you don't seem to understand that it can be extremely difficult for people. It's not like flipping a switch. You should thank the gods you have the mind you have, with all the tools to live a healthy lifestyle. Not everyone has that.

Re: Fat Acceptance
Another fair argument that I heard on the show is that it's not really your place to assume that a fat person is unhealthy (as if they asked you anyhow). Sure, obesity is a bad health indicator, but it's not a guarantee. Sometimes fat people have great cholesterol and blood pressure, and sometimes they outlive skinny people.
So keep your opinions about the health of any individual fat person to yourself.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

1. Heroin
2. Crack
3. Alcohol
4. Nicotine
5. Prescription drugs
678. Maybe try a salad instead?

This is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever heard. The "fat but fit and healthy" myth has been debunked countless times.B wrote:Another fair argument that I heard on the show is that it's not really your place to assume that a fat person is unhealthy (as if they asked you anyhow). Outliving a "skinny" person? Does cancer run in their family? Were they a smoker? What were their co-morbidities?

Re: Fat Acceptance
Ello Sailor's argument seems to boil down to "Drug addiction is worse than eating disorders, so f*ck those fatties."

Re: Fat Acceptance
Usually the addiction/disorder is a symptom of underlying issues/traumas. And if you take away one addiction, another pops up in its place. It's not as easy or simple as "take the food away".

Re: Fat Acceptance
Funny you should say that, because many replace it with exercise. There's a natural high in there if you choose to dig deep.

Re: Fat Acceptance
True. Getting into that routine is a great lifestyle choice. I'd highly recommend. But again, you can't force or bully people to be motivated.

Anyway, this is pathetic. I have a fairly good idea of who I'm dealing with here, and it's saddening.
