the other day I was alone in the car and had the chance to actually sing along with it. As expected, it helped solidify the song for me.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
It has been bothering me for a a week, but I finally put my finger on it. The Sirens solo by Mike is very reminiscent of what he did on Dying Days by the Screaming Trees. Maybe it is the acoustic flavor then boom an electric lead on top of it.
Yes - as a child of the '70s & '80s and high school with crappy hair metal, the verdict is still out for me on this one. I want to like it, the structure, the lyrics, but the schmaltz. Oh the schmaltz is killing me Smalls.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
This morning I heard the following on XM's Octane:
Breaking Benjamin - I Will Not Bow
Pearl Jam - Sirens
Avenged Sevenfold - Hail to the King
One of these things does not fit.
That being said, it was nice to hear on the radio and like Sir Stippleton, I enjoyed singing a-long to it. I still give it a 3/5, but I'd rather hear Sirens on the radio than most anything off of Riot Act or Backspacer.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
I have been listening to the new Kings Of Leon album the last two days, and I am completely underwhelmed by it. The songs & production are so simple and plain. I was happy to get my hands on some new kings and thought that this would take me away from the new PJ and give me a chance to let everything sink in. After just 3 listens of that album, I'm bored. There honestly isnt that "lets keep listening and get a better grasp on it,". Its boring and there is nothing to grasp. It is simple... I honestly keep going back to Sirens and am blown away by the sound of the song. Its just in another galaxy. Lyrically, musically, the production.. Everything. To me its 100x better. Im probably close to 30 listens already on sirens , and i still cant remember all the lyrics by heart.. It makes Kings of Leon look like a bunch of little kids playing in a highschool band.

Are you sure one of them doesn't fit, or is it just that the other two made you want to claw your ears off?broken iris wrote:This morning I heard the following on XM's Octane:

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
The lyrics are definitely one of the things taking the cheese off this song. It wouldn't have grabbed me so hard without those lyrics. There are some cheesy lines but I like the context enough that it doesn't bother me.Noaheb wrote:well I don't know the lyrics well yet so I was missing that aspect of the experience but yeah I don't expect it to get demonstrably better or anything...
I'm still into this, and I'm not sure the cheese factor diminishes anything else about it. I wonder how we'd feel if none of the reviews had said "80s rock ballad".

To me it's less 80s rock ballad and more early-aughts alternative rock radio ballad.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
Yeah, that's a fair criticism. It would be an altogether ill-advised genre experiment, if I didn't think it really worked and if it didn't actually move me emotionally. What can I say, I can't argue with that. If I can say any anything overly kind about it, it might be that it's Pearl Jam -- inventors of the genre -- once again claiming it as their own territory, because yeah, other bands may have done it but PJ do it properly, with more genuine feeling, wisdom and experience. Just my opinion.

I've also heard it on XM's "The Pulse" which is basically dad-rock with some Kelly Clarkson mixed in. But I didn't want to mention that and feed the trolls since it fit much better there than on Octane, the hard rock channel. It's probably some kinda of cross-market promotional thing with them hosting PJ radio.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
I guess I'm just glad that I'm not subjected to shitty radio, it means I can enjoy Sirens in a vacuum. I would never in a million years listen to the crap it's been compared to by choice, so there must be something different about it; I just think Nickelback etc. is a lazy comparison.

absolutely... i said that in another thread (or maybe this thread)... i don't get any 80's feeling from this song. it seems more like a late 90's/early 2000's track (3 doors down, or lifehouse, or whatever)..theplatypus wrote:To me it's less 80s rock ballad and more early-aughts alternative rock radio ballad.

Who did that horrible Arms Of A Angel song? I like Sirens but it definitely edges towards the cliff of a song like that.

You're right. The guitar solo is pretty 80's though.Tass Man wrote:absolutely... i said that in another thread (or maybe this thread)... i don't get any 80's feeling from this song. it seems more like a late 90's/early 2000's track (3 doors down, or lifehouse, or whatever)..theplatypus wrote:To me it's less 80s rock ballad and more early-aughts alternative rock radio ballad.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
sorry, i forgot to mention that... the guitar solo is a bit over the top, so in a sense i can see that as a bit 80's, but nothing else about the song gives me an 80's feel.LikeLukin wrote:You're right.
