Yep I think I agree with everyone that it was super stupid with loads of unnecessary side quests but the monsters were cool.

He seems to be doing the exact same part as pretty much any of his recent series or movies.

I liked it. Not only does it not take itself seriously, it doesn't go the other way and wink at the camera. It plays it's stupidity totally straight, without too much melodrama. The previous movies failed at this.

All the stuff with Millie Brown and company was bad filler though.

He probably didn't even know what movie he was acting for. Just repeated the usual dumb father crap bla bla bla.

This was fun. They’ve set these two up as good guys the last few movies, so I was wondering how they’d reconcile that. I liked it. It was a bit chaotic in my house so I’ll have to watch again and pay better attention, but I got the sense that this is following along with the trend of these movies getting better over time (human acting still an issue).

I want to see the original Godzilla movie now....and maybe dive a little bit into some other.

I do want to see Shin Godzilla, i got some pretty cool merch back when i went to Japan and the movie premiered the year before. They even had a gigant Godzilla prop on the top of the Imax theatre in Shinjuku.

Shin Godzilla is good. They're obviously operating with a fraction of the budget of these Monsterverse movies and it really, really shows. Not just in the monster scenes, but the human scenes have a really wonky, student-film quality that is kind of offputting, plus that annoying Evangelion quick-cut thing. The Godzilla designs and destruction scenes are cool, though. It does this thing where it draws a parallel between Godzilla and the Japanese government as a slow-moving monster weighed down by bureaucracy, which is clever, but it also means that 70% of the movie is men in business suits walking around being stern at each other. Ultimately I'd put it about on par with this one, quality-wise, but they do very different things. Shin Godzilla thinks it's smart, while Godzilla vs. Kong knows it's stupid.

My now 10 year old went nuts for Godzilla a few years ago. I think I found him every movie and he watched them over and over. The only one he didn’t watch was Shin cause I couldn’t find him a dub and he wasn’t about to read subtitles.

Watched this last night. It was a visual delight but the mini storylines running through it were all over the place and somewhat nonsensical. It kinda reminded me of the last Star Wars movie in that regard. But way less frustrating.

These "same day release" movies are apparently only up for 31 days.
