Atlanta councilman Antonio Brown, who voted to defund police, has car stolen

An Atlanta mayoral candidate who voted to defund millions of dollars from the local police department’s budget reportedly had his car stolen by a group of young thieves this week.

City Council Member Antonio Brown had just gotten out of his white Mercedes coupe to speak to fellow community leader Ben Norman in northwest Atlanta’s Dixie Hills community Wednesday when he spotted four or five kids — the youngest only 6 or 7, WAGA-TV reported.

The children were walking around a store — and within seconds were inside Brown’s car, he said.

“One kid was in the driver’s seat,” Brown told the outlet. “Ben attempted to open the door to get him out of the car. He fought with Ben. I then engaged and tried to get him out of the car. The three other kids were trying to figure out how to get in the car or stay out of the car. He started to hit on the gas. Ben let go.”

“As he started to speed up, and I knew that if I had not let go, I knew I probably could have killed myself because he was going so fast, I would have started to tumble,” he added. “And I would have hurt him.”

Brown said he filed a report with the Atlanta Police Department.

“This is a generational poverty issue,” Brown said. “These kids, it’s 12:30 in the afternoon. Why aren’t they in school? Why aren’t we enforcing systems to ensure that if they are not in school, they’re in recreational centers?”

Was he successful in his bid to defund the police? Because if they're still getting paid to prevent crime, then they're doing a shitty job.

Maybe armed officers aren't the best tool for enforcing truancy violations.

I have no idea what you are going for here B, but in your opinion, what does this guy think these hypothetical 'systems' are suppose to be doing to these kids?

So, let me be clear. Those kids stole a car. That's grand theft auto. The police should be involved.

But you bolded “These kids, it’s 12:30 in the afternoon. Why aren’t they in school? Why aren’t we enforcing systems to ensure that if they are not in school, they’re in recreational centers?”, like "Ha ha! This guy wants to defund cops, but he wants cops to enforce truancy laws! Gotcha!" You can want people to enforce truancy laws AND not want cops to be the ones who do it.

Maybe you could send out social workers? Fine parents for truant kids?

I'm not a policy expert, but I'm sure if someone thinks really hard, they can think of something to do other than sending an armed officer to confront children whose great crime is missing school.

The letter bemoans a “culture of lawlessness” that allows the " the kinds of violence and tragedy we witnessed (over the weekend).”

The letter is a sharp response not only to the violence of the weekend, but also to the policies of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who earlier this year announced that she will no longer prosecute a host of crimes, including drug possession, public drinking and urination, and trespassing, among others. It also comes as the police department faces mounting questions from residents about its strategies to quell violence as homicides and non-fatal shootings remain at high levels.

I would congratulate them if this were at all feasible, but the city will immediately put a lien on the property and yank their permits real quick. Killdozer, however, is Lindy.

We have a lot of similar things going on in Seattle what with not charging people for lots of various crimes. The latest one that made headlines last week was a 29 year crazy homeless guy attacked a 67 year old (I have to assume based on location) low income guy walking his dog. Attacker was mugging the old guy to steal his jacket. Attacker kicked old guy’s dog, killing the dog. Attacker was arrested and judge released him the following day. (My point about low income being old guy gave an interview saying the dog was all he had “I don’t have much and I’m not going to complain about that, but the dog was all I had.”)

I love the idea of withholding property taxes in protest to shit like this but unfortunately it would backfire on you.

That said if you’re willing to pay several years’ worth of penalties and you save the money, you could pay like 5 years’ worth of back taxes and clear the lien/foreclosure pretty quickly. How would the city do if people stopped paying property taxes en masse? Wouldn’t that be something.

How’s that criminal justice reform working out so far?

Which of the reform laws that Maryland passed is preventing police from addressing public intoxication or illegal drug sales? All I’m familiar with is the bill that expanded public records access and body cam requirements, added no-knock warrant prerequisites, and changed the way police shootings are investigated.

It can’t be a result of defunding, either.

The Baltimore City Council approved a $4.3 billion spending plan Tuesday, leaving a $555 million allocation for the city's police department intact despite pleas from some members of the public to cut or eliminate spending on law enforcement.
