Re: NHL Thread
Hey how's this been working out so far.philpritchard wrote:Thanks!Mickey wrote:Actually was just here to talk shit but then I looked up the specifics of the Toronto cap situation and I'm blown away all over again--currently 13 million over, with 30 million tied up in Tavares/Marner/Matthews and one defenseman signed for next season. Good luck.
The Marner contract is a clear overpayment, but let's talk about this again in a few years when Point signs a long-term deal for $12 million/year and Marner still has three years left on his current contract.
Being $13 million over means absolutely nothing at all. They'll be cap compliant when the season starts without losing anyone from their roster. They may have to have fewer players in the press box each game. Meh.
As for the defense, they have more than $12 million in expiring contracts on the blueline next year. That pays for one of Muzzin or Barrie, covers a small raise for Dermott as an RFA, and leaves a few million to make a small move or two. Add in a couple of the top defensive prospects in the league (Sandin and Liljegren) to provide a couple cheap, high-ceiling options on the back-end, and things will probably be just fine.
Also, the Lightning have $6.9 million in cap space for next year. They have 14 players under contract. This "paying your stars and rounding out the roster with league-minimum players" thing isn't exclusive to the Leafs.

Re: NHL Thread
Third round matchups are now already set:
Winner of Colorado/Vegas plays winner of Winnipeg/Montreal
Winner of Tampa/Carolina plays winner of Boston/NYI
Could end up basically just being ECF/WCF.

Montreal / Boston cup would be cool, but I don't want that.Mickey wrote:Third round matchups are now already set:

Re: NHL Thread
At the risk of jinxing things, it's probably Colorado and Boston/Tampa.

My ability to pick winners and losers is so good, that I'm super confident of my Montreal/Boston scenario.Mickey wrote:At the risk of jinxing things, it's probably Colorado and Boston/Tampa.
Just to piss off Toronto (and everyone) a little more.

Re: NHL Thread
Scheifele doesn't get an in-person hearing so the max penalty is five games. I'd be surprised with less than three, but he's not a repeat offender so I don't think he'll get the full five.

Re: NHL Thread
It;s an awful hit but if he does a fly by/stick check, Evans scores. I wish there was an option for Schiefele to bear hug Evans and there be a neutral zone faceoff.elliseamos wrote:Yup. I felt sick.Mickey wrote:Schiefele hit on Evans was so bad.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

But the puck was already in the net by the time he made contact...

Scheifele gets four games. Seems right to me. Huge blow to the Jets.

I actually missed that the first time I saw the hit. I’m good with four games and wish the league would crack down on post goal hits in general.Mickey wrote:But the puck was already in the net by the time he made contact...
