His whole character felt like a note from the corporate overlords

I thought it was a nice misdirection. Bringing in an actor of that caliber for a small part helps to constantly cast suspicion upon the character because we can't imagine Pearce being there for such a small role. His name continued to come up as the potential killer in conversations about this show, and I'm not sure that happens if the writer is played by an actor nobody recognizes.
