Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Regardless, they were both played without mistakes. To us this is just another live video, and the fans know PJ occasionally get things wrong live. To everyone else it's the official single video. They can't seriously expect to take on new fans if they make flubs like this. It looks amateurish to everyone outside the fanbase.WtOB? wrote:even flow was a re-recording done in-studio, and alive had matt chamberlain not dave a.harmless wrote:Even Flow and Alive were live, right? Both drummed perfectly.WtOB? wrote:which official single video had real live audio when dave a was in the band? none of em. matt messing up is not this band's main concern right now. it's one little out of time fill, it really doesn't matter. the band could have done another take but it's not important enough. it re-enforces the live feel.harmless wrote:Dave A. never fucked up what is meant to be an official single video, though. From a drummer's perspective it's kind of embarrassing that that will be people's first exposure to the song. I love the song and the rest of the video but wow, the intro...
The rest, well that's, like, your opinion man. It's two out of time fills. It doesn't keep me up at night, but I read people commenting on lack of guitar, wrong chords, etc. etc. all the time, but when I mention a drummer's mistakes it's relegated to a non-issue. That's kind of how the drums are treated by guitar fans, though, and that's fine with me.
it's just that this mistake isn't as bad as playing the wrong chords or some of those awful mistakes mike makes. it's just a little out-of-time fill.

They actually had to have Matt go back and mess it up after the first take.

Also, why isn't this mistake as bad as guitarists' mistakes? I hardly notice guitarists' mistakes.

It's just a weird bias. If a drummer noticeably goes wrong it's to "enhance the live feel", if a guitarist does it, it's a mistake.

Not really. Most people are pretty passive about listening to the drums.harmless wrote:Is that a joke?verb_to_trust wrote:Because people actually listen to the guitars.harmless wrote:Also, why isn't this mistake as bad as guitarists' mistakes? I hardly notice guitarists' mistakes.

because it's the equivalent of a guitarist playing something a tad out of time for the space of one or two bars. it's not the same as a wrong note or something. i think because you don't like matt you're pushing this one a bit too far.harmless wrote:Also, why isn't this mistake as bad as guitarists' mistakes? This is nothing to do with not liking Matt. I think Matt's drumming so far on this album is great. I also think it's great on Binaural / Riot Act, and most of Backspacer. I'm not a fan of his drumming on S/T and he doesn't get me off live.
But you're right though, this really isn't as important as guitarists' observations, it probably didn't even happen.

I don't see why this erases the fact that it happened, and people who will notice it will be totally turned off by the video just as I was.verb_to_trust wrote:harmless wrote:Except for ones that aren't, right?verb_to_trust wrote:Not really. Yeah, but the vast majority of the people who have watched that video didn't notice and don't care.harmless wrote:I don't see why this erases the fact that it happened, and people who will notice it will be totally turned off by the video just as I was.verb_to_trust wrote:harmless wrote:Except for ones that aren't, right?verb_to_trust wrote:Not really. For me, the most important things are vocals: melody, lyrics and delivery. Everything else is just a space to put the vocals in.
