A big part of my (very draining!) month has been engagement in local politics.

The main objective regarding funding is, "What about the kids with IEPs?"

1) A decent chunk of those are for affluent parents with dumb kids trying to game the system

2) Seems useful to know the 'true cost' of a student segregated into a special needs class. Shit, maybe the voucher can be adjusted based on such a status.

3) This is already what happens in some upstate NY Hassidic communities (public school is attended almost exclusively by kids with IEPs). The state shouldn't be compelled to make up for deficits in city and county funding.

Every day, you guys, I get a little closer to running for local office. Problem is it’s a huge time commitment (mostly evenings & weekends), doesn’t really pay anything, and I have young kids.

What are the issues compelling you to run, and how/why are the current public officials falling short, in your opinion?

i did not

The latest one that made headlines last week was a 29 year crazy homeless guy attacked a 67 year old (I have to assume based on location) low income guy walking his dog. Attacker was mugging the old guy to steal his jacket. Attacker kicked old guy’s dog, killing the dog. Attacker was arrested and judge released him the following day. (My point about low income being old guy gave an interview saying the dog was all he had “I don’t have much and I’m not going to complain about that, but the dog was all I had.”)

I love the idea of withholding property taxes in protest to shit like this but unfortunately it would backfire on you.

That said if you’re willing to pay several years’ worth of penalties and you save the money, you could pay like 5 years’ worth of back taxes and clear the lien/foreclosure pretty quickly. How would the city do if people stopped paying property taxes en masse? Wouldn’t that be something.

Withholding property taxes in protest may be a fine form of public resistance, but what would you actually want to do from within the legislature to address homelessness, or mental illness, or crime/jail facilities/recidivism?
We’ll have to hook up for a beer some day and talk this all out.

Doesn't everyone? There are only 150 Idahoians.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

It's odd, I've somehow met four of the last five governors here in some manner. One was because my dad worked alongside him a long time ago. Another was just by having seats pretty close to him at BSU basketball games when I was a kid.
