Now it emerges the BBC and the daily mail(the worst kind of British government propaganda tabloid the ones who championed brexit) both just happened to have reporters on the British ship. Just coincidentally.

My hopes and prayers that Rick Scott and Marco Rubio vote for an infrastructure plan are with Florida.

Seriously though, I watched that video all morning yesterday and didn't understand that the empty space in the bottom right of that picture used to be a building. I just thought it was flat ground. I can't believe there is any chance that any of those 99 people are alive? :(

Since they attempted to take a camera and were prevented I'll say that this is a funny situation, but it also feels like the usual extortion play Police typically talk up:
Less than three hours before the attempted robbery, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong held a news conference in which he criticized the City Council for passing a budget that reduced police spending by $18 million — diverting much of those funds to the city’s department of violence prevention in an effort to support alternatives to policing.

Armstong said a surge in violent crime makes it more crucial to increase police funding and warned that police response to 911 calls could be delayed as a result of the cuts.

Police response times are already pretty terrible. That an armed private security guard prevented it makes it worse. Private citizens are barred from lawfully defending themselves, and then you reduce police funding further?

The previous budget for the two-year period from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021 included $665 million for the police department. This was about 20% of Oakland’s total spending. The new budget includes $674 million for the police department, which will account for 18% of the city’s total expenditures.

However, the new budget also includes large amounts of funding for policing alternatives. About $18.5 million in funds for these alternatives was taken out of Mayor Libby Schaaf’s proposed $27 million increase for the police department.

The coverage has not been great.

Regarding policing alternatives, Oakland had some success with their ceasefire program.

Gains from that pretty much evaporated last year.

WTF is going on with westcoast ports?

I understand they prohibited any useful automation so offloading is painfully slow. Why any union longshoreman would resign during the pandemic is beyond me. Is this a trucker shortage?

A sudden massive increase in containers from Asia to the US must correspond with a transfer of industrial output as well, unless I'm missing something.

There's a global shipping container shortage because longshoreman are corrupt fucks, but that does not explain it all. Please help, my economy is dying.

I just read that rescuers at the collapsed condo in Florida heard a trapped woman’s voice for a few hours but they never found her before they stopped hearing her. That’s fucking gut wrenching and terrifying

There was one story where a woman woke up in the night and saw a crack forming on her ceiling. In a panic she forgot there were emergency stairs on her side of the building and ran to other to exit shortly before her side collapsed. the whole thing is insane and makes you wonder how many coastal hotels or other high density residential properties built a couple decades ago are in similar situations.. not even negligence.. they just don't know it.

Has anyone seen a good writeup of whats happening in Tigray? Heard nothing but stories of Ethiopian and Eritrian troops committing atrocities and preventing aid for months, and all of the sudden the Tigray rebels retake their regional capital and parade around thousands of POWs.

I think it came out later that the HOA knew there was an issue as of 2018, but decided to kick the can down the road rather than substantially increase fees to address the issue immediately.

I don't know how you factor in the risk for stuff like this into HOA dues. If there's an issue after the term of the builder's liability has elapsed, the HOA has no recourse but to pony up.

There are some upsides to single family homes, such as being stingy rarely risks more that your household and immediate neighbors, as opposed to 130 lives.
