What do you think of Phish?
Outstanding musicians, but I'd rather listen to the Dead.

I had a brief infatuation with The Mars Volta around the time that Frances the Mute came out. They spent some time as my favorite band, though I never got around to getting into At the Drive-In other then a handful of songs. I got into other stuff after Amputechture and mostly left them behind.

Every once in a while, I'll listen to one of the first two albums again, and I kinda get where Trag's coming from. The actual sound of the albums (production or engineering or whatever) is kind of irritating and doesn't serve the music well. At the time, I was into the meandering thing they do, but it hasn't remained compelling in the present day. The performances are fairly strong throughout, though I get the sense that Omar and Cedric took themselves too seriously, especially the former.

I'll listen to some TMV every now and then. Usually Frances the Mute, but they have several good albums. I don't mind the meandering. Omar and Cedric will probably never top ATDI's Relationship of Command though.

Did any movie damage a band's reputation as much as Almost Famous damaged The Doors' rep?

Some Kind of Monster. Just imagine how big a jerk Lars is if he thought the movie presented him in a good light.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Event 1: Oliver Stone's The Doors comes out in 1991 starring the up and coming Val Kilmer. The Doors become cool again with every Gen Xer in America. They are talked about as legends. Posters of Jim Morrison go up in dorm rooms everywhere.

Event 2: Almost Famous comes out in 2000 and captures the zeitgeist. It features a scene where Lester Bangs (played by up and coming Philip Seymour Hoffman) takes a big shit on The Doors, calling them drunken hacks pretending to be poets. Basically every mention of them from here on out is about how overrated they are. They are seldom mentioned in the pantheon of rock gods afterwards.

I am always so split on The Doors. I do like their music but after a while it starts to sound like mental circus music. Maybe it’s the keys or that in combination with Jim Morrison sounding drunk and belligerent.
