I love how heated arguments get in the NHL thread; no other sport inspires such vitriol on this board, I don't think (except maybe when Sox fans argue with each other).

That's pretty much what I expected. No issue with the first slash, three preseason games for the second.

no issue w/ using ur stick as a weapon? really? i know he's a leaf, but lets be real here. if colton orr did this he'd be suspended the entire regular season.philpritchard wrote:"While we acknowledged that Kessel's initial motivation was self-defence, he persists and swings his stick again even having escaped the immediate threat from Scott," Shanahan said.warehouse wrote:if there was a way to abbreviate it im sure id be the first to find a wayPeeps wrote:well i owe mecca $5

Kessel used his stick as a weapon to slash a guys leg. Meanwhile, that guy was trying to use his fists as a weapon to punch him in the face. Scott's actions had the potential to do a whole lot more damage, he just never got to him. Scott now has a bruise on the back of his leg. Poor little guy.warehouse wrote:no issue w/ using ur stick as a weapon? really? i know he's a leaf, but lets be real here. if colton orr did this he'd be suspended the entire regular season.philpritchard wrote:"While we acknowledged that Kessel's initial motivation was self-defence, he persists and swings his stick again even having escaped the immediate threat from Scott," Shanahan said.warehouse wrote:if there was a way to abbreviate it im sure id be the first to find a wayPeeps wrote:well i owe mecca $5

It has literally nothing to do with the Leafs, for me. If Orr went after Vanek and Vanek chopped at his leg, I would have no issue with it, either.
The bigger issue I have is the idea that goons can go after star players who have no interest in fighting. That's a lot more dangerous than a slash to the leg.

LOL. everything in this post has to do w/ you being a leafs fan. scott tried punching a guy and kessel used a weapon, but u think what scott did was worse? again, be real boss. if kessel didnt wanna fight all he had to do was back up, everyone on the ice, and people not on the ice, came to his defense. letting him use his stick as a weapon (repeatedly) is sending a terrible, terrible message. much worse than "goons" going after star players. which is also hysterical, b/c orr does this all the time.philpritchard wrote:Kessel used his stick as a weapon to slash a guys leg. I said what Scott tried to do would have been worse. Scott never got at Kessel, so obviously it wasn't worse. If you had been involved in the play, what do you think would have caused more damage: a fight with Scott or two slashes to the leg from Kessel?warehouse wrote:LOL. everything in this post has to do w/ you being a leafs fan. scott tried punching a guy and kessel used a weapon, but u think what scott did was worse? again, be real boss. if kessel didnt wanna fight all he had to do was back up, everyone on the ice, and people not on the ice, came to his defense. letting him use his stick as a weapon (repeatedly) is sending a terrible, terrible message. much worse than "goons" going after star players. which is also hysterical, b/c orr does this all the time.
The first swing happened before anyone had jumped in. That's why I don't mind it. The second swing, as I've already mentioned several times, was bad and deserved a suspension.
The only time I know of that Orr did anything remotely similar to what Scott did was when he grabbed Gionta/punched Bourque, which at the very least happened during play. I also never said I condoned it.

If slashing becomes an accepted reaction to attempted fighting then how long before those slashes are aimed higher?philpritchard wrote:I said what Scott tried to do would have been worse. Well for starters, this isn't really what would typically be considered "attempted fighting," is it? And secondively, if slashes are aimed higher, the consequences will be much, much more severe. That argument can be used to make anything look worse:vegman wrote:If slashing becomes an accepted reaction to attempted fighting then how long before those slashes are aimed higher?philpritchard wrote:I said what Scott tried to do would have been worse. If hitting becomes an accepted way to separate a player from the puck, how long before those hits are made from behind?
If punching becomes an accepted way of defending your teammate, how long before kicking is accepted?
If blocking shots becomes an accepted way of preventing goals, how long before players are lying stacked on top of each other in front of the net?

orr has been going after star players for years. watch when he's on the ice w/ crosby or giroux. he tried to kill mike richards a few years ago, but simon gagne of all people jumped on the back of orr and saved richards life.philpritchard wrote:I said what Scott tried to do would have been worse. As much as I enjoy arguing with you guys, I also value your opinions. I get to keep six players going forward. Who would you take?
Stamkos, Tavares and Weber are definitely three of them.
The other three spaces would be between Keith, Phaneuf, Pacioretty, Kadri, Pavelski, Green, Backes, Rinne and Niemi. All along I planned on keeping Rinne, but I like picking goalies late and it's tough with a goalie on a team that isn't expected to win many games.

yeah def keep him. i know he had a good year last year, but it was 1/2 a season. i kinda expect him to lead the leafs in points this year. and probably lose in the first round to the flyersphilpritchard wrote:Turns 23 right after the season starts.warehouse wrote:keith, kadri, niemi

What I really like about him is that, throughout the last few years of his development, he's done a good job of showing dedication to improving his weaknesses. There are still flaws in his game, but I like the way he plays and I can see him continuing to improve because the desire, effort level and dedication all seem to be there.

I'd keep Kadri, Keith and Rinne. Maybe Pacioretty instead of Keith. PP d-man are usually easy to find. Rinne may not help with wins, but he's good for 5+ shutouts every year.

Re: NHL Thread
That's what I thought about Rinne when I had him the last couple years, but the thing that has me questioning it is that I had Rinne and then picked Niemi and Reimer in the late rounds (which is how I usually like to pick my goalies). They each ended up with 4-5 shutouts last year, Niemi was by far the best, and Reimer and Rinne were almost identical other than Reimer having a few more wins. I don't know that Rinne really provides anything I can't just pick up later (or try to grab in the first couple of rounds).shinkdew wrote:I'd keep Kadri, Keith and Rinne.
