How realistic are the market numbers on discogs? I'm finally getting around to inputting my modest collection and I'm stunned by how much discogs says I can get out of some of these records. Those numbers can't be right, right?

Assuming you are putting in the correct pressings?

I wouldn’t put a ton of faith in them. It’s better to look into the historical sales of each album.

I'm not looking to sell anything any time soon. I was just curious. I think I've done a good/careful job of inputting the right pressings. But maybe not.

Honestly, I think the market has been a bit inflated over the past year. People have been buying so much online that there isn't much stock left in these stores. 'Snatcher is right, make sure to look at what things have actually sold for as opposed to what they're listed at.

What's an example of something that's more expensive than what you thought? Ask B, I like to do a little edition investigating.

My Empire Records soundtrack, Idler Wheel, and several PJ records all list over $100. All of that seems bananas. Benaroya Hall is like $4,000

Thrill Jockey just put up their represses of Tortoise’s TNT and Standards. Both are clear marbled vinyl...

I have an inherent suspicion of clear and marbled vinyl, like it’s probably lower quality. Is there any truth to this?

It was certainly the case 20 year ago, but not so much anymore. There’s definitely exceptions, and most people will say that those exceptions are less likely to happen with black vinyl. In today’s age, it boils down more to the mastering and the press’s quality control versus the color

The one thing everyone agrees on though is that picture discs are shit quality.

That being said I don’t like clear vinyl at all. Ive never compared a clear pressing with a black one or have any facts to back up my opinion, but just the look of it doesn’t give me any confidence in its quality. There’s no reason for me to think that other than it just being clear haha. I do have a few though, I’ll check them out

Exactly. I can hold up a black record and be like, “the music is IN there.”

I hold up a clear record and I’m like, “I can see my couch.”

I recently opened a splatter vinyl that has a piece of "splatter" across the last 30 seconds or so of the final track on side B. It's probably the first "flaw" like that that I've seen in maybe 5-6 years.
