There were some rumors that he was floating above-slot salary requirements to teams 1-3 so that he would be there for #4. Looking to play for a winner, and why wouldn't he? He could be starting next summer.
I'm all for it.
The kid from Taiwan had a nice debut. The future is bright!

Thanks, Doug!
She's clearly a Kike fan. And with that hose, who wouldn't be.

I dont pretend to know anything about these players, but he was universally ranked as the top prospect in the draft.
But they need pitchers and now will use over slot money for this kid, when they could have done so later in the draft.
He could be amazing, who knows, but if you need pitching take pitchers.
Most teams draft based on the best player available, though, because needs change so much from year to year.
The Red Sox need pitching today, sure, but Rocker wouldn't have helped them this season. And even if Leiter had fallen to them, he's not helping this year. Maybe next year, the year after more likely they would be up. Maybe. And who's to say that at that point, Bello isn't up and pitching like an All Star? Maybe Song is back. Maybe Groome straightens it out. Mata comes back from TJ and is lights out. Seabold is solid. Suddenly, you don't need pitching. It'll sure be nice to have a blue-chip shortstop in the system when our current SS opts out and leaves in free agency.

I'm not talking about the Sox needing pitching, I'm talking about the system depth. And I do get the pick and am excited for it, I'm mostly just being contrarian and had in my mind they'd take Leiter or Rocker.
Here's hoping he works out. It'd be nice to maintain strength at ss (as you described).

If Leiter AND Mayer had been available at 4, I honestly don't know what they would've done / what I would've wanted them to do.
FWIW, I think they've done a good job at adding pitching depth in the past 2 years without using the draft for it. See: Whitlock and Ort via Rule 5, Seabold, Winckowski, and Pivetta through trades. That's how you address need.

when you're the 4th pick and the player that was supposed to go first falls to you, you take him
I get it. I agree. I just had in my mind that Rocker would be the guy. It just seemed like a fit on so many levels, but with Mayer sliding, I can understand Chaim's choice.

You dont draft for need in baseball, half of these players will never even make the major leagues, and it will be years before the ones that do arrive.
