Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
I'm not arguing anything about the length of that song. That particular section could be alright, if anything whatsoever had been done to make it interesting (not to be confused with "play a solo"). As it is, I don't see why they didn't go right into the second verse lyrics.stip wrote:McParadigm wrote:The musical "break" after the first chorus always causes me to make a bit of a face (yeah, that face. That's the one), because it really does nothing for the song. It's not like there's such a powerful atmosphere to the verse sections that it requires reintroduction, or anything, and nobody really felt the need to color it up enough to justify it. I just find myself singing "Where-uhs the siiiruhhnnns?" whenever I get to that part.
I couldn't say that it's necessary, but I do think that the length of this song, and the drifting sameness of it, the lingering moment that this song is chronicling, helps it. It's almost 6 minutes but it is a fast 6 minutes, which is remarkable since it's not like there's a ton of movement in the song.
I'm usually arguing for songs to be shorter, but not here.

oh I know. I'm just guessing that maybe it was related to the overall pacing.McParadigm wrote:I'm not arguing anything about the length of that song. Someone might need to explain to me why this is nothing like 'Sirens'.
It basically contains the same drum groove, the same reverby, sliding guitars, and the same giant guitar solos.

Well, if they contain the same checklist items, they must be the same.harmless wrote:Someone might need to explain to me why this is nothing like 'Sirens'.

I don't remember saying they were the same. But I'm just countering the theory that they sound nothing alike, as some of the Floyd fans who don't like the song would like to think.McParadigm wrote:Well, if they contain the same checklist items, they must be the same.harmless wrote:Someone might need to explain to me why this is nothing like 'Sirens'.

Comfortably Numb bores the shit out of me. Can't stand it. And they sound nothing alike.harmless wrote:I don't remember saying they were the same. The songs don't, but the stylistic flourishes definitely do.McParadigm wrote:Comfortably Numb bores the shit out of me. Can't stand it. I see where your argument is coming from, just as I can see where Mike thought he was writing a Pink Floyd song...just as I can see where Gilmour thought Learning to Fly was going to be a Floyd song, once upon a time.
I just think all three of you are focusing on individual qualities and miss the big picture.
Not a bad crowd to be in, that, though.
