Americans have spent over $500 billion on weight loss products in the last 15 years. It’s really, really paid off. If the rest of you worldbeings ever wondered how Americans are all so thin and fit, now you know.

But that evident, lasting benefit is now in danger because of Pinterest, a website. How will people with weight problems ever be goaded into self-care, if they aren’t constantly made to feel insecure by the people trying to sell them gimmicky products while they look at pictures of home decor and anime pillows?

Not this.

The interesting thing is that they used the phrase "banning all weight loss ads" rather than saying they are banning fad diets or diet pills, because that wouldn't signal to the right people, or create the necessary outrage bait.

I assume because it's limiting/excluding some pronouns.

Maybe, but it’s more likely it’s a “fat acceptance” signal. Which in one sense is positive because shaming and bullying overweight people is not a good thing, but on the other hand obesity is a major contributor to everything from cancer to COVID to diabetes to heart disease. Society has vested interest in eliminating it. We can simultaneously not be dicks to overweight people and not endorse it as an oppressed identity group in need of corporate coddling.
