If they want to write punchy and fast rockers they should write songs like God's Dice.

The drumming's a treat all round in this album. Actually, all the pushes I was trying to draw your attention towards on ATW, they're very much like Matt's performance on this album. Groooove.

I've had a bit of a small revelation whilst listening to this.

Even in this album, Matt does some of that ride-cymbal tinkling in the chorus that I don't like (Insignificance), but because the actual song has more balls than current songs, more 'seriousness', I don't notice it and don't dislike it. Sometimes I want him to thrash around more with new PJ because I want him to make a song more aggressive. He didn't used to have to.

With the caveat that I know absolutely jack shit about drumming, does Matt sort of approach this one with a Jack Irons feel to it? I feel like it's got this stuttering thing going on the snare that Jack loved to add to the up-tempo songs he played on.

It's not my favorite record by them, but overall that's got to be the best run of songs they have. There's at least four songs in there that I could conceivably put in my top 10.

I think this is my least favorite album. It's just...I dunno. It somehow doesn't stand out to me. The songs aren't bad it's just nothing stands out to make the album special to me.

However I love Thin Air. Think that's the best track on the album.

You know I still don't like the album. But I think if the first three tracks were removed, and Light Years opened, that the album would work much better

You may be right, I haven't really listened to Jack's drumming in that much detail. I think the drumming in this song (and this album really) has more force and aggressiveness to it than Jack's does, but Matt was relatively new to the band here and it shows  Also Jack was less metronomic than Matt. That approach is sometimes Matt's strength (here) and sometimes a weakness (live, a lot of the time, and on a lot of S/T).

well yes. I've found that eliminating the worst songs on a record often helps improve it's quality :)

this is still my favourite record of all time. what a period of creativity. it's so bizarre that the band dislike it so much.

i'm blasting it now through some headphones with this altered tracklist:
1. breakerfall
2. sad
3. education
4. light years
5. nothing as it seems
6. fatal
7. insignificance
8. of the girl
9. thin air
10. grievance
11. rival
12. sleight of hand
13. soon forget
14. parting ways

i really don't like messing with the tracklist too often, though.

For me it's not even that they're the worst songs but that A. They are the worst songs, they come in a row, and they come at the beginning. And B. They have really nothing to do with the rest of the album (IMO.)

They leave a bad taste in my mouth because to me they're some of the least interesting 'rockers' in the catalog. While I find songs like Nothing as it Seems and Thin Air to be some of the MOST interesting 'non-rockers' in the catalog. So I think the three songs in a row at the beginning helped give me that opinion that this is a generic boring album. But you know, I think Light Years actually works as an album opener even if a bizarre one, and kind of like the opener to No Code, would give the feeling that this is a different kind of album, and put it in a different light that it works better under.

Anybody who finds the first 3 songs "uninteresting" has their head firmly planted up their ass.
