Alright, I'm having a tough time understanding Miami in particular when it comes to Florida's mess. Maybe 4/5 can help out here.

Miami-Dade County has been outstanding with vaccinations. Over three quarters of the adult population is (presumably) fully vaccinated. They also had bad waves before--a month ago they had 19% of positive cases as a share of the population. Now, obviously there's some overlap between people who were vaccinated and got the virus, but my thought is that that would be offset by people who caught the virus and there was no record of it due to not getting tested. There should have not been that much fuel left for the virus to burn there. Yet, Miami-Dade's cases skyrocketed like anyone else's in Florida. About 2% of the population has been known to be infected in this past month.

The only mitigating factor I've heard hypothesized is the snowbird factor, where Florida's vaccination rates may be inflated due to non-Floridians getting vaccinated in the winter but being counted as Floridians since they got jabbed within the state's borders. But is that enough to explain it all? Oppose that to the most aggravating factor I can think of now, one that's been in my mind before and is now getting more ingrained: that we're all going to catch the virus at some point. Delta may be demonstrating this process starkly.

The good news at least looks to be that the number of hospitalizations still remains dominated (90%+) by the unvaccinated, and the few vaccinated hospitalizations overwhelmingly have additional aggravating factors like comorbidities and immunocompromisation. We have got to get serious about mandating the vaccine and crushing the antivax forces.

The percent vaccinated is cumulative since last winter. So if the vaccine's ability to prevent infection is waning in those who got it early, and waning faster in older people, then you can end up with very high vaccination rates and simultaneously have increasing hospitalization/infection rates because for many people the vaccine isnt working anymore. The good news is that the R0 number is decreasing in places like FL and TX. The bad news is that it's on the upswing as you head north.

Do we know yet whether waning capability is a thing? If it was, we would likely see more infections among the vaccinated who got it quite early, and that would overwhelmingly be old people.

And yes, the migration north could be the bad news. Two areas I'm concerned about are Detroit, which hasn't had that many cases but is really lagging behind in vaccinations, and upper New England, which has the opposite--high vaccinations but fewer cases.

One place that's also running under the radar as a potential next hotspot are the non-Bay Area, non-LA parts of California. There are some big areas like Riverside, San Diego, and to a lesser extent Sacramento and Fresno, that have been lagging more on vaccination than I would have though.

Yes:

But it appears that the Moderna vaccine lasts longer... possibly because it's given a much higher dose... which may explain some of the difference in rates.

Boosters will be needed for the first wave that was vaccinated starting as early as next month:

Yeah I've read that already. The reported efficacy is still quite high. I'd like to see some of the mass numbers that we may get from the latest wave.

My understanding is that the CDC stopped collecting that data in May, so we may not be able to know that. Here’s the former FDA director indicating he thinks efficacy is declining and boosters for all are coming soon.

A friend of mine passed from Covid about 2 hours ago. We’ve been buds for around 35 years, I guess. Since around ‘86 or ‘87. We weren’t super close and I didn’t get to see him much anymore, but it was always a treat for both of us when we’d run into one another and catch up. He was one of the few (2?) black guys that was in our class and yet it was never about that with us. He was just one of our pals and that was it.

His mom just passed from it at the end of June. I can’t imagine what that poor family must be going thru.
