Trump was a nightmare and deserved every ounce of media scrutiny/hate that he got.

But I am literally begging one single person to make a convincing case that the new guy is any better.

We could have been in Afghanistan for another 40 years with the same outcome. Someone down the line was going to have to pull us out and it was going to go badly. Every year we waited we threw more money and lives at an unsolvable problem.

Biden made the call, and he had to know it wasn't going to be good for his political future. He'll be in front of a mic soon taking ownership for his decisions.

Don't worry, with all the outrage over Dr. Seuss, and CRT, and Olympians competing or not, this too shall blow over. The guy is teflon. Look, executive orders are forming to the east and hurricane season is here, too!

I've seen this take a lot. Love to know how you'd feel if you were trying to get a flight out of Kabul right now.

I have little doubt that any other president would botch the withdrawal just as badly, but it does seem botched, and Biden is going to get rightly flamed for that. Surely there was a way to phase this out over the last few months? Still, its better than staying there for years and years.

But when you're told that the puppet government would hold out for a few months (despite all available evidence), mistakes will be made I guess.

I haven't read through the past pages so I'm sorry if there has been some great discussion on this topic. Verb's bs internet persona has made coming here a lot less enjoyable.

Did someone HAVE to pull us out of Afghanistan? Is America's role in the world to prop up governments that can't stand on their own? Is that democracy? Is that supporting democracy? Could Obama have done better to bring a deal between the Taliban and the Afghanistan government?

I'm of the mindset that we've tried, through 3 presidencies and 20 years to get them ready for this moment and it's just not happening. I am sure there was a better way to draw down and get people out, but I'm okay with Biden being the guy to make the tough decision.

It is pretty amazing that our elites in the military industrial complex were conned out of trillions for twenty years by a bunch of mountain goat herders.

Our leaders are idiots.

I'd be pissed that my government was too stupid to foresee this happening. I totally agree with you that the embassy should have at the minimum temporarily relocated to somewhere else in the Middle East to see what would happen. The Taliban were always going to retake when we left, but also verb is right that more people should have been evacuated before the fucking military.

I don't mean to exonerate Biden on the whole process. There was a super miscalculation on how well the Afghans were going to step up.

I’ll say one thing about the American administration.

It’s really world class at distracting from the terminal climate crisis report we just got the other day.
