Lyrics tend to matter to me, but I'm pretty forgiving overall, provided I like the song. It's very, very rare for me that a single lyric could drown a song all on its own for me. But that one comes as close as it gets.

Of course...its not a bad cover, it just seems kind of pointless to me. I wish he would have arranged it differently is all. I can't listen to it and not be replaying the REM version in my head.

Haha!

Not at all. All ahead of him if he chooses to jump in.
I’m just happy to hear them put some stuff down together. Been dreaming about that since I first heard pearl jam all that way back. This is mad for me.
Tender mercies for the win.

I love this song. Its perfectly playful. As clumsy and 'ear catching" as it is, i dig it. It fits the song.

When the ?? crows in the morning, on another red letter day
Ill be a busy bee honey, ill be working hard for my pay
And in the cold of the evening, when you just cant find your way
Ill be a stargazer darling, im gonna search till we find our way

When the apple tree’s are blooming
And there’s a new child on the way
Ill be a nest full of honey, im gonna work hard night and day

Ill be a waiting, oh waiting patiently
No hesitating, when you call me ill be ready

And when the blue night blacks above you
And your old ghosts come out to play
Ill be Dan Ackroyd honey, im gonna chase those ghouls away

But when the long nights twist and turning, youll need to sleperhalej rarege wah way what??
Ill tell you stories from the city, ill take you a half a world away

Ill be a waiting, oh waiting patiently
No hesitating, when you call me ill be ready

Woo!

I actually like the song otherwise, which might be why it's all the more glaring.

Overall, I enjoy this somewhat, though I may not really be the audience for this; I've personally never found Eddie, the solo folk artist, super compelling (for example, I enjoyed Into the Wild, but it never struck me as powerfully as I think it did for others). You can definitely hear this as being more of a Glen record, in terms of the production and sweep of the songs, and in the songwriting itself.

But the Cat Power songs are great, and I was pleasantly surprised by the songs where Olivia Vedder takes lead; for being that young, she seems really cognizant of holding back to make later moments in the song all the more impactful (i.e. that one moment in 'My Father's Daughter' where she breaks the range she's singing in the whole song to go higher).

Tsuga wrote:I tend to think Ed tends to sound best on quieter songs when he embellishes his performance less and just sings something straight. I'm thinking of "Dead Man" and also Cat Power's "Good Woman" and "Evolution," and a lot of Into the Wild. For me things get a little cringe-y when he *performs* them. Some of these songs will grow on me for sure, and Olivia's are wonderful! But I don't think I want to listen to "Drive" again, despite what 15-yr old Tsuga would have said about it back in 1994.

Agreed.

What was the point?

It's like karaoke.

They even kept the reverb

It's like they took the original recording and simply replaced the vocal track with a worse one

just listened.

initial thoughts:

– Cat Power is the standout here

– "my father's daughter" with Ed's daughter is nice. I think trag described it well earlier.

– "there's a girl" would have been better with Ed and Cat Power

– enjoyed the percussion in "there's a girl". i know it's nothing wild or incredibly unique, but kinda has a dark solemn jazz club / Tom Waits feel to it

- "rather been home" would have been a nice guitar instrumental without Ed moaning and heehee'ing over the top. get over yourself.

– "flag day" felt like an Into The Wild throwaway. He's really hung up on this particular sound as a solo musician.

– swear to god i thought "i'll be waiting" was a cover of phantom planet's "california" when it started

- i enjoyed "wave". my favorite ed/glen duet on the album. really liked the drawn out ending with the piano

– "drive" was useless, but i guess sorta cool to hear ed cover rem? i'm guessing it was cheaper for ed to cover it than pay for it to be on the album? i dunno.

- "dream" was heart wrenching and was the only song that made me stop working so i could sit back and listen. good god what a song.
