You're not going to (easily) mistake an electric guitar for a drumkit or a tuba - but there are definitely a whole bunch of legitimate sonic variances between different guitar models.

Way back in the mid to late 50s exposed pickups were considered unsightly. I've also heard they provided a means to reduce interference, but this is heavily disputed.

With that Jackson it's little more than an aesthetic throwback. I think they look like shit and they absolutely do get in the way. Most people actually ended up removing them for use as an ashtray!
