Well I think the same about MFC's chorus, so you know... I agree, but it doesn't break the deal just like other weaker choruses haven't. I don't think this band have a great batting average when it comes to choruses.

That bit didn't sound good at Wrigley at all, but it was because either Stone wasn't playing his second part, or we couldn't hear it. But it really beefs up the part, that riff.

That should be easy with plenty of listens; it's much more tightly structured with more interesting and distinct parts.

The chorus is the worst part of Lightning Bolt. It could have been a much more interesting song if they went in another direction there.

Yup, and it's one of the best things about the studio version, as is that final noisy verse and the outro. It's just all so passionately performed, it doesn't matter about the little niggles. I always liked that about Pearl Jam; when a song grabs me to the extent that all the flaws stop mattering, I know it's worked its magic.

I'm not sure I'd agree with all of those examples, but yes, arguably.

The worst nosedive a PJ song has ever taken in the chorus was Supersonic. Lightning Bolt will never be the anti-climax that was. It's worse because I quite enjoy the 50s rock-n-roll style "great balls of fire" verses.

As the anthemic grungers enter their third decade, the tension between their fleshy ‘classic rock’ core and punk rock impulses grows only more pronounced. Recorded in two separate bursts, Pearl Jam’s tenth album veers between explosive rockers and dulcet ballads. Getaway and Mind Your Manners pick up the pared-back, garage-y hurtle of 2009’s Backspacer, albeit with added thrilling scree from lead guitarist Mike McCready. The softer tracks find the group negotiating their path to maturity with confidence; Sleeping By Myself clearly began life as one of Eddie Vedder’s ukulele ditties, and might turn off the gruffer, more cynical corner of the audience, but its aching charm is undeniable. Sent skyward by a classic McCready guitar solo and a sensitive, restrained vocal from Vedder, the piano-driven Sirens cleaves to just the right side of sentimental cliché – a tightrope Pearl Jam have profitably trodden throughout their career.
