What does it mean when the inner or outer grooves sound better or worse? I've always thought my outer grooves sounded a little rough compared to the inner...

Two possibilities... you have too much anti-skate pulling the arm back at the start of the side, and then it's better on the inner grooves. Or your cart is misaligned.

For your cart, if it's setup properly then a record will sound consistently good through the whole side. If you download a standard arc protractor (see example below), you'll have two null points where the cart needs to be squared up. It can be a painstaking process, but when you get it right you'll hear the difference. In your case it may be ok on the inner point, but misaligned on the outer point.

Greetings waxophiles,

I'm in the market for a new turntable so I thought I'd first consult those here with greater knowledge than I.

My ancient Technics has carked it, as has my HiFi/amp setup - so I'm looking at getting something with a pre-amp this time so i can plug it directly into my 5.1 surround sound system (is that commonly done these days?).

I also thought I may as well get something that converts to USB as I have some records kicking around that I'd really like to get digitised. Most I've read about online claim to have 'transfer to mp3' capabilities - surely this is simplified marketing and they can convert to lossless as well?...

I've seen some good suggestions in this thread before - would really appreciate any recommendations that suit the above requirements and are hopefully around the $300-$400 mark.

i have the at-lp120 (minus the usb connectivity, which was added shortly after i got mine) and can give it a recommendation as well. eventually i'll upgrade, but for now it's everything i need/want in a turntable.

Even without the usb you can aux out of your receiver to the line/mic in on your computer and record with audacity.

What's the objection here? Digitizing LPs, or using a USB connection to do so? Is the quality of sound ripped any different to using an aux out to mic in?

I have a heap of vinyl-only tracks I'd love to get quality digital rips of for listening away from home, so this factor weighs pretty heavily in my decision to pull the trigger on the AT-LP120-USB...

I don't see what the problem would be. When I do aux out to mic in it's coming not directly from my turntable though but from my receiver, so I guess I'd be getting the quality coming from the Marantz as well at that point.

Sorry, I guess I'm being a bit of an analog purist on this one. I just don't like the thought of that AT deck with the built-in pre-amp and I would recommend something like that. It's all very plastic and cheap to me. If you're going to spent that money, do what Pete does and get a nice quality table that you run through your pre-amp into the PC. The built-in USB is a bit of a gimmick that you're paying extra for.

Maybe I shouldn't talk here, as I don't rip any of my albums to PC but I know if you're going to spend the money focus on a top quality table first and foremost and then worry about how you're going to transfer to the computer. I wouldn't make it the primary driver of your purchasing decision.
