Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I mean, echoing pretty much everyone else, it's Petty karaoke. It's similar to when I heard Dance for the first time; it feels so overtly and self-consciously in someone else's style that it's a bit difficult initially to hear past that. I ended up loving that song; I doubt that'll happen here, but you never know. It could partially be a taste thing; I like this style of music, but it just has not been what I've been interested in listening to recently, so I could be catching the song at a bad time.

Yeah this would have made a lesser later day Petty song but as a tribute it’s ok I guess. Inoffensive keeps coming to mind. I wish he’d sing a song straight 16 year old me would be in shock by this statement but I’m not a fan of his voice anymore. I mean it’s still there sort of under all the warbling. I assume he could cut it out but obviously he likes it.

Yes, but the freeway is close, unless you take the long way to the further exit. She didn’t want to go directly there. So she took the long way, to the freeway.

look. if she’s not going to bother to take the fastest, most-direct route there, why even bother jumping on the freeway? and how fast was she going?

This exactly. His timbre is naturally dramatic. He doesn't need to sell the import of a lyric so hard.bada wrote:Yeah this would have made a lesser later day Petty song but as a tribute it’s ok I guess. Inoffensive keeps coming to mind. I hate some of the annunciation, I hate rhyming long way with freeway. The lyrics seem a bit undercooked. That been said, the outro is rad, the production sounds really good and I love that he is playing with and getting produced by some different collaborators.
The chorus is pretty naff, but lots to like in the back half of the song
I also let out a shudder when I saw the flip of the single was a song called “the haves”

Also, still saying this is great. Better than inoffensive. Not every Eddie Vedder song needs to be an epic affirmation of life poetic anthem.

I like it as it’s really singing about dragging out the end of a failing relationship.

The warbling is here to stay, you either grow to like it or don't. It's not bad here though. Some good choices.

I also like Chad Smiths drumming. Less robotic than MC's. Has a little pep and pushes the song forward.
Very poppy. Very curious to see what this album is gonna be like working with a pop/big time hot producer.

The warbling isn't apparent in "Comes than Goes" (if it is, it's very subtle) which I guess is evidence of a choice being made?

Yes, song structure suits his voice well, but it is a pretty limiting range for others types of songs.Habitman wrote:The warbling isn't apparent in "Comes than Goes" (if it is, it's very subtle) which I guess is evidence of a choice being made?Monkey_Driven wrote:The warbling is here to stay, you either grow to like it or don't. I just read this producers credits, how on earth did Ed end up with this guy? I’m not saying it’s a problem, just can’t imagine how it came about.
He is also seems to be one of Scooter Braun’s guys, and scooter seems to be a detestable piece of shit

Can't imagine having strong feelings either way about this song

I initially thought the line was wrong way, rather than long way. I like wrong way much bettertragabigzanda wrote:Don’t freeways typically offer the fastest route over the more circuitous country roads?

There seems to be less warbling in songs with more lyrics. The warble tends to come into stronger focus when he is holding a word.Monkey_Driven wrote:Yes, song structure suits his voice well, but it is a pretty limiting range for others types of songs.Habitman wrote:The warbling isn't apparent in "Comes than Goes" (if it is, it's very subtle) which I guess is evidence of a choice being made?Monkey_Driven wrote:The warbling is here to stay, you either grow to like it or don't.
