I think on lyrics alone (not looking at melody, vocal delivery, passion, etc.), I would rank the chorus of Corduroy pretty high based on the lyrical content and where Ed/the band were at at that time.

Betterman is good, but just from the same album Last Exit and Corduroy are superior by my tastes.

I might get some flak for this, but one of my least favourite choruses is Dead Man. I like the rest of the song, though.

Tuolumne wrote:PJ's always been mostly about feeling for me. Technically, there's tons of other writers that achieve better chorusus, melodies, lyrics, whatever. But what's specialy about them is Eddie's vocal delivery and passion, and then the different combinations that occur and collaborations and the variety anmd depth that brings.

I also think when we're dissecting albums as they come out, their old stuff wouldn't have held up to this sort of criticism as well ("he's counting numbers in Animal, huh"?). That said, their best chorus is Betterman.
I really hate the counting on animal. The hand gestures that come with it too.

Love the rest though.

Yes. And also yes. Corduroy is my favourite Pearl Jam song and not least because the lyrics are some of Ed's best.

For being such a "difficult" record, Vitalogy does have their best choruses.

I'm a huge sucker for the Satan's Bed chorus. Even though they just repeat "already in love" the music underneath it is so weird and perfect for that song. An off-kilter classic.

Last Exit is another great chorus.

Porch, State of Love & Trust, Breath, Daughter, Last Exit, Corduroy, Betterman, I Got Shit, Present Tense, Sad, I Am Mine, Undone...

Those are the choruses that jump to mind when I think of ones that are spectacular on their own strengths, independent of every other part of the song.

Honestly, Even Flow belongs on here too, though it's been destroyed for me at this point. But the once or twice a year I unexpectedly hear the studio version on the radio or something I'm always taken aback by what a strong chorus is actually is.

Agreed, though GTF can be compared to Lightning Bolt in that written down it's not that great:

He's.. flying

No, I really love it. It's really well done and flows so beautifully from the first part of the chorus to the second part. (I was the fool because I thought -> I thought the world).

There's a lot of good choruses on Riot Act, actually. Love Boat Captain is a good one.

I must say, I absolutely LOVE Lighting Bolt's chorus. I hated it live, but damn did it grow on me. It's my favorite part of the song, I love the riffs in the chorus too. It's not my favorite song, but I belt out "Lightning BOOOOOOLT" everytime. 8-)
