Re: R.I.P.
That was the point I tried making when I was almost banned for using "r" word appropriately here before... I'd bet it'd even be argued that using it in a joke is worse

You'll never get through to the phonies, Tree. Probably best to drop it.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

trag, are you saying that if it were actually funny when I said "r" word, it's more PC and wouldn't get me into trouble?

There is nuance and context to all things. Fabricating outrage to distract and divide is absurd. The culture war isn't real, it's a political fabrication.tree_ wrote:Really? But to answer your question, no. I'm not okay using those words, which is why I don't use them. More importantly, the groups disparaged by those words don't appreciate their use and I respect that. Having said that, I'm not gonna tell you I've never laughed at a well crafted joke that uses those words. A former co-worker of mine is gay and hates the "f" word. It repulses him. But he always laughs at that scene in The Hangover. He finds it really funny and openly says so.
Again, nuance and context. Like George Carlin said, anything can be funny, it all depends on the exaggeration. I'm sure Norm told a lot of jokes that I wouldn't have laughed at or that may have rubbed me the wrong way or made me cringe. But he also told a lot of jokes that I adore, and made me happy, or made me think. He was a master of his craft. His career and contribution to the art form deserve to be celebrated; his passing mourned.
My respect and admiration for him is not hypocritical. I can love Norm and hate the "f" word at the same time.

Thanks joe. I honestly get very confused how white knight PC people can seem to pick and choose but that does clarify your position for me
