Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler.
Only my second foray into this kind of novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so that I've checked out the sequel, Parable of the Talents. Climate change, economic decline and a popular drug that makes watching fire feel better than sex have America on the brink of McCarthy's The Road. The narrorator is a 15 year old African american girl. It's a great read, but sometimes unsettling.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I went to see Moya read at Brown right around this time, too. I remember he was reading from this at the time, but I hadn't read it yet, so I had him sign my copy of Senselessness.Malloy wrote:yeah, you or mick put it on my radar back then.Simple Torture wrote:According to Goodreads, I finished it last on March 22, 2011.Malloy wrote:big 2009-2011 what are you currently reading energySimple Torture wrote:

Re: What are you currently reading?
Just finished Lincoln in the Bardo. I enjoyed it and enjoyed being stretched as a reader (dealing with all of the voices, attuning to the world Saunders was creating and being okay with not understanding parts of the story only to have them fold out beautifully), but I don't think I would recommend it to many people.
I just started Saunder's A Swim in the Pond in the Rain. I've gotten through the first short story and am absolutely loving this book. So many people here should pick this one up.

In Swim....he takes 7 short stories from 4 Russian authors and breaks down what makes them so amazing. It's the best of both worlds.tragabigzanda wrote:Hatfield wrote:Just finished Lincoln in the Bardo.
