The movie works as is but there was so much left out (politics, the dinner, more clarity on Yueh's motivation, getting to know the citizenry, etc.). The dinner would've covered multiple bases but it likely would've felt off, tonally, with the rest of the movie as currently structured.

Oh, I agree with the exception of the deleted Yueh scene; I enjoyed it as-is. But I do think non-book-readers would've enjoyed the entirety of the narrative pieces in series form.

If I hadn’t watched the David lynch version and felt lost enough to look up some of the lore, I wouldn’t have appreciated the exposition. However, they weren’t super clear about the messiah prophecy beyond the doctor talking to herself about Paul.
