What movies are you watching?

Caught Bram Stoker's Dracula on tv today. First time I had seen it since I watched it in the mid 90s when I went through my horror movie phase as a ten year old.

Keanu Reeves is awful. Winona Ryder is bad but not as bas as Keanue. Besides that, very good movie. It's a shame that those two bring it down a notch because they're surrounded by fantastic actors giving great performances.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Elia Kazan’s favourite of his own movies. Never seen it before. Very interesting first half an hour so far, about rough times for Greek and Armenians in Anatolia. The main character is dreaming of going to America.

I watched Moonstruck yesterday. The 1980s romantic comedy starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. I really liked it. It was so over the top but they leaned into that unapologetically. Some hilarious scenes, and the pacing was excellent.

i saw it for the first time this year and had the very same thoughts. so damn good.

Yeah, i really liked Waits music once i heard the Asylum albums. Then, warmed a little bit more to all the other stuff.

And him being in every Jarmusch movie helped a lot.

Watched two on the plane last week, both of which I’d seen several times before:

Risky Business: outside of one specific story beat, I think this is a perfect movie. But you take the Tangerine Dream soundtrack away, and the whole vibe probably changes quite a bit.

The Departed: over the years, the Wahlberg character has gone from my least favorite to my most favorite part of this movie.

what didn't you like about wahlberg's performance?

my favorite thing about the departed is all of the compensation at play in scenes with both damon's character and alec baldwin's. happened to watch half of it yesterday. lots of great comedy. shares some comic moves with sopranos.
