Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

They are kinda representative of the best that can exist under the current iteration of Hollywood I think. They are filmmakers who make movies that appeal to corporate execs. This doesn't mean that they are bad or that they are sellouts, just that their movies are more likely to get made right now than people with other aesthetics. More so for Nolan than Villeneuve.

I don't think they're sellouts at all. I think they're making exactly the kind of movies they want to be making. I just think whatever little magic that makes something jump to another level is missing from their movies, whatever that means. It is true that there are only a handful of directors that seem to be given free reign to do whatever they'd like within the studio system. Nolan is one, Villeneuve is just about one. I guess Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson are, too, on another side of the spectrum.
The trend of shoving talented up-and-coming or too-long-neglected indie directors into the Marvel box or the Star Wars box is often the case. Taika Waititi is pretty much the only one who has made that work. Most others come out looking worse for wear. It elevates seasoned TV directors, like the Russo brothers, but it seems to not be great for most anyone else. Patty Jenkins is making it work, I guess.

Reading Dune Messiah now and it's remarkable how similar Dune and Dune Messiah are to The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. I wonder if Lucasfilm was consciously inspired by the themes/narrative structure of those Dune books. Obviously there are aesthetic differences. I'm really talking about theme and structure. Specifically the sort of (very minor spoiler for Dune Messiah)
