I rewatched Chasing Amy last year and was surprised at how well it held up

The worst of the early Kevin Smith movies is the original cut of Mallrats. That whole opening sequence is SO LONG and boring. It's funny to realize how patched-together the theatrical version was after they realized they had to remove the original opening, the first act changes completely

I think what's happened with Chasing Amy is that when it first came out, I rooted for Holden and Banky. Now the movie still holds up, but I want them to fail.

Yep. The takeaway is that Holden is 100% dead wrong, the movie does not actually side with him. It's much more clear in the text watching it now as an adult

The incidental music is also so bad, like early 90s porno quality bad.

Oh yeah. I immediately think of that "triumphant" guitar solo when Jason Lee and Shannen Doherty reunite at the end. Very chintzy

I should say that I do think the theatrical/"classic" version of Mallrats still has some charm, but the original cut (which was released on blu ray a couple years ago) is just atrocious

Clerks is such a perfect encapsulation of that time. I don't know how he managed to capture that despite not being terribly talented, but he did. It will always be one of my favorites.

Mallrats is pretty funny, but everything else sucks, and his later day fanboyism is pretty pathetic.

Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Red State are all really solid movies for various and differing reasons.

Mallrats is probably the least of them but also the one I have the greatest fondness for.

Chasing Amy is probably good most fully realized and successful piece.

I love Dogma so much.

Was Kevin Smith ever actually funny? Or did his movies just come out when we were all young and stupid?

Yes, and I have no interest in rewatching any of his movies.

I get the sense that many Gen Xers and millennials went through a similar trajectory with Kevin Smith, where they were fans as teenagers (something about an interconnected universe was very appealing in the pre-MCU days, his unusual candidness about his experiences in the industry was very entertaining, and his whole indie underdog story was compelling), but then as we grew up all the things that were ever fun and subversive about his work became much more normalized, and so those early movies started feeling a little embarrassing. The fact that he himself morphed into an embarrassing stoner dad doesn't really help much.

He seems to be a decent guy, if often thin-skinned and somewhat annoying. He was a formative part of my early movie fandom. I think I will always be rooting for him in some capacity

Dogma was fun when i see it...in the fucking theatre! only saw it once. My favorite is Chasing Amy. Loved it when it came out, and loved it when i saw it again a few years ago. After that his best movie is Red State but of course both Clerks and Mallrats are fun and a product of its time. Tusk was interesting too until the fucking end with the podcast voiceover.

The jay reboot was embarrassing. Jersey Girl was a piece of shit. Never saw Cop Out or Yoga Housers. Jay strikes back was also super bad.
