just checked this in the Official RM Thread Rules, and they count.

Actually they count double. So its 4 bands.

Early The Who is a good example but even they eventually saw the light and added another live player

U2 uses a lot of backing tracks live I think... not sure whether they count

U2 use a backing track now for sure, but I don't think they did early on; if you listen to Under a Blood Red Sky or Rattle and Hum, Edge does a pretty good job filling in the sound. I'm sure the heavy delay effect helps.

Question related to the OP: is there a rhythm guitar track during the solo on the studio version of "Scar Tissue?" I don't remember one. I think maybe they just suck live.
