I forgot Frank plays guitar in Pixies yeah.

Still every other band i mentioned is a great example.
Hell, your story about RHCP being weak with John...Those guys can get pretty untouchables with John, specially in the early years and 99-2000.

Also, lets add some more, just for the kicks:

Mudhoney (during the Lucky Ones sessions, they were tight as hell)
Black Keys
White Stripes
Screaming Trees until 1996

we could also say Faith No More or Incubus could be listed but i guessing the dj or the keyboards help with the sound sometimes? Who cares right.

Primus!

The solution seems to be either overdubs or have your bass player incorporate chords or busy basslines to fill out the sound.

Yeah. A bit of distortion on the bass also helps during the jammy bits

Wait, why do you want to hear a bunch of other noise during a guitar SOLO?

Harmonic accompaniment = "a bunch of noise"

He holds one sometimes, but I don't think it's plugged in.

Can’t believe it took til page 3 for White Stripes to be mentioned.

Muse is a great example. They have a backup member for a while now, but still Matt Belamy has everything they need. He sounds huge.

True, but I think it's more about how full Wolstenholme's bass sounds while Bellamy is soloing.

As Jorge mentioned, bass distortion/fuzz works really well in traditional 3 piece rock setups.

Jane's Addiction was a good call.

Bands with a keyboardist such as Faith No More don't really count.

If we are talking about distorted bass, Audioslave did that very well.

yeah, but they also had more midtempo songs and ballads, i feel they really nailed it with Audioslave. I think Timmy C spoke about it, and said that Cornell was fundamental on teaching him how to do it.
