"Because their lives are busier with other obligations, songwriting has to be done a little faster or they just have to find ways to produce things in shorter time frames. Backspacer was recorded quickly and they were happy with it, but he acknowledged that quick records might eventually suffer from poor quality."

But is he saying that drop in quality would be a bad thing, or an OK thing as needs must?

I agree, I think that's what I'm saying. They're just a rock band and probably find it refreshing to be able to do what they want, even if people don't like it. But as they get older, what they want to be looks more and more like a classic rock band with fewer experiments and surprises.

I actually think it would be straight up badass if they would write a song a'la Neil's Walk On...a sort of messagey self-aware "yeah, we know some people arent gonna get it, but..." track.

but their's would be about how they write what they feel, and that's gonna mean soft pop music and old people stuff sometimes, and tough shit.

Since songwriting is arduous, We can brainstorm lyrics for them.

I fell in love

with the sound
of something soft.

They left it hanging

I took it down,
and brushed it off.

Etc.

I think soft would be fine if it didn't also sound so shiny. You either need shiny heavy stuff or low-fi soft stuff.

In general, these dudes are way more self aware than some on RM give them credit for. Music has been their life and they think about it constantly. They may not always know how they're perceived in certain corners, but I guarantee they understand how their work and song writing process fits into the larger context of their career. It is their career, after all.

The question is how are they perceived in any corner really? Even if they tried to get some sort of feedback from their fan base like reading trough message boards it's not like they'd get anywhere. It's not like there's consensus about anything.

Anyway, what I'm hearing from Lightning Bolt is that they might be moving away from the songwriting approach that I wasn't keen on, towards something a bit more weighty. So that's good and I'm happy with that. The best thing LB could've done is make me interested in where PJ goes next, and it's definitely done that.

Which I guess I am. I'm amazed to degree to which things get analysed here. "Song A is a 4.5, but the cymbal crash (which Dave A would have nailed) in the third chorus is a 2.5." I guess I just enjoy what I enjoy. I log in here and I'm always staggered by what the issue of the moment seems to be.

To be fair, whenever someone criticises the apparently trivial complaints we make on RM, they tend to make them even more trivial to make their point. If anyone's complaints are unreasonable you just need to quote one I think you can usually balance out people's complaints with the "evidence" they've gathered for them.
