I have a friend that was a casual Tom Waits listener but only really liked his first two records. He wasn't able to warm up to Tom's output from the 80's onwards disliking his voice mostly. Now he seems to try again and his record of choice is Real Gone because he loves Hoist That Rag. That is the last record I thought he would like. The first song he loves now next to Hoist That Rag is "Don't Go Into That Barn". And I thought I might get him someday with something of Mule Variations maybe and now it's working with Real Gone.

I just wanted to share this little story.

Still to this day I cannot listen to "Hoist that Rag" without wanting to dance like an idiot. The guitar solo brings a smile to my face everytime.

The problem (or the brilliant thing about, depending on how you look at it) with Tom Waits is his constant reinvention. It's almost impossible for me to consider that they guy that wrote those first couple of albums also wrote Swordfishtrombones and Bone Machine. I'd almost have to break up his career into thirds and do a top 15 for each phase of Tom Waits.

Oh man, when I sit down to think about my favorite albums from each decade, Tom shows up at the top of the 80s, 90s and 00s. And sits comfortably in the 70s.

He's also written my favorite album of all time.
