What I enjoy about the new songs other than the lyrics and how good Ed sounds are Mike's solos. They sound different than his normal stuff.

Ed really does sound on top of his game right now from what I've heard of LB so far.

Yeah. For the first time in a while I'm looking forward to finding out how he performs the rest of these songs. These have been a surprise so far.

I'm so excited to hear that people are loving Ed's vocals on the new album. That was one of my biggest fears. But it seems like people are digging them, more or less, across the board.

he does. the energy of backspacer and S/T without the screechiness.
Thus far it is actually a pretty mid tempo record. Not much screaming, and when it happens it really nicely punctuates a song.

MYM might actually seem more of a statement, rather than less of one, for being the only song like it.

yeah I wonder if it will feel more impactful for being alone.
Still such a great song. It might end up being my favorite on the record when the smoke clears. I know how this one is gonna age, I think.

I was pretty lukewarm to MYM initially, but oddly enough i've really started liking it ever since i put together a little playlist of the leaked LB songs. Getaway and MYM are a pretty strong 1-2 punch leading off the album....much stronger than what we had on Backspacer.

It feels alot like the Last Exit to Spin The Black Circle opening. Which is great.

You know what i think? I think he not only is a way better singer most people give him credit for but he also gives way more shit about his singing than it may seem. He's never been plain bad. I do think he went trough a couple of transition periods when he wasn't on top of his game though.Revelator wrote:Ed really does sound on top of his game right now from what I've heard of LB so far.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I think he struggles with being a great singer. He wants to be liked by people like Mark Arm and John Doe. I think now he doesn't care, and realizes he has a great voice and should use it the best he can. This may have come about after being on tour with Glen Hansard. Early he got guff about his yordel around Ten and V. He moved away from that and built his tone over the years.Mine wrote:You know what i think? Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
He started moving away from it right away but it was gradual. No Code is an album of someone who cares a lot about his reputation as a singer, too bad no one noticed. I appreciate the fact that he didn't grow into a caricature of himself which isn't that rare for aging rock singers. He has a fair share of more or less annoying ticks but at least he changes those every 7 years or so.Tj wrote:I think he struggles with being a great singer. I have a not so secret theory that way less singers become caricatures of themselves when they get older than people claim. It's actually just an easy, lazy accusation to throw at any big name singers.Mine wrote:I appreciate the fact that he didn't grow into a caricature of himself which isn't that rare for aging rock singers.

Agree w/ both, he just seems to have really found a comfort zone or something.Tj wrote:I think he struggles with being a great singer. He wants to be liked by people like Mark Arm and John Doe. I'm a fan of backspacer, but if you compare GSMF or Got Some to MYM, he sounds more winded/screechy on the former like he had trouble keeping up w/ the band. I was really impressed/relieved when I heard how in control and clear he was on MYM, like finding a comfortable pace during a half marathon or something.
And there's no contest if you look at Just Breathe or even Come Back (where he sounds really nasally to me) vs. Sirens where he absolutely hits it out of the park, not with the Ten-era wailing or whatever you wanna call it, but with palpable emotion, clarity and conviction.

Same with songs, imo. "Pearl Jam trying to be Pearl Jam" is either Pearl Jam just not sounding very good anymore, or Pearl Jam trying to do something different.

A lot of people don't understand the difference between something just not being very inspired or good versus being derivative.harmless wrote:Lament wrote:I have a not so secret theory that way less singers become caricatures of themselves when they get older than people claim.
