When a band is but a fraction of Pearl Jam, but they aren't zero Pearl Jam.

I like some soft-rock, and I often even enjoy schmaltz. The aesthetic isn't really the problem, IMO, it's the writing
agreed

and because I can appreciate schmaltz I can confidently say that I'd give this song a pass and enjoy it if Ed's output was otherwise stellar, if he was at the top of his game for his age, but it isn't and he isn't, so I'm just meh

I went from listening to this to giving Comes Then Goes a spin. Gave me severe whiplash.

I actually think musically it’s pretty good.

It’s the lyrics and melody seems all over the place.

There are nice parts for sure, like the minor fourth chord at the end of the chorus (I think it would be considered the chorus anyway). There are definitely the bones of a good song here -- just not the guts of one unfortunately.

Song sucks ass. Not quite Future Days levels of ass-sucking, but pretty close. With his contributions to Gigaton as well, I'm just not in the same space as that dude at all anymore. Maybe when I'm a bit older this material he's currently churning out will resonate a bit more. I guess we all change a lot between the ages of 35 and 55.

I think that’s a good summary.

yeah, i dont really think the song is bad. I just cant seem to like these type of songs. Musically its fine, ed´s performance is fine too...but its not what i want to listen from him or anyone else.

Ill skip this one a lot.

I’ll probably just smooth the grooves of this song on the record so the needle just glides right over it.

I listened again

look, I quite like it musically; it's sweet and sentimental but not in an overdone way like "Future Days", where you're just begging to get someone to turn it off because the second-hand embarrassment is too much (I don't hate that song either but everything about the way it was recorded is cloying)

my issues are:

weird pronunciations again, the kind of thing Josh seemed to control for Gigaton ("ALL OF THE HAAAYYAAAVES")

a melody that sounds unfinished, like this was a song in the process of being written, instead of done; I know Ed is into the idea of stylishly "brushed off" / one-and-done stuff, but he's not that kind of artist (anymore, at least)

lyrically, it's just really banal and obvious; I do like that he's not cramming every line with words, but it seems like Ed either *does that*, or does the opposite: takes simple and bland words and phrases for an uninteresting wander ("they ain't got yoooooooou"... long space); he never just hits the sweet spot of the right phrase in the right space (anymore, I could point to plenty of old ballads where he did)

Ed just needs to be turned down in the mix; his voice is so loud that the pretty intricacies of the music aren't being showcased, and all of the above flaws are drawing attention to themselves

it's not bad, I'd slow dance on a beach to it if I was dating an Ed / PJ stan

Look, the sentiment that "hey, some people literally have everything in the world and that which they dont have they can get, but....i tell you what babe.....they aint got you"

Thats great. Fucking sweet. Amazing. We should all find someone we love that much.

I just dont think the lyrics get there.
