Re: Alanis
The Jagged Little Pill Live DVD from back in 97 is fucking out of this world. Still one of my favorite concert DVDs. So much raw energy and passion. Alanis is a fucking supernova on stage.
I'm still so pissed that her NJ show got cancelled. I was SO looking forward to that night.

Re: Alanis
Similar to Pearl Jam, I won't argue with anyone who says any of those first three major label albums are her best (Jagged, Supposed, URS).

Re: Alanis
Obviously I fully respect Alanis and all her autonomy. Her reasons are valid whatever they may be. I believe her and I trust that the decisions she made regarding the Jagged documentary were thoughtful and honest.
Deciding whether or not to watch it in light of her choice not to support the film was extremely difficult as a fan. I remain ambivalent to the extreme.
Having said that, Jagged is a powerful, hopeful, uplifting, and worthy film. I think it's an incredible portrait of a person and a time. It's so full of joy and authenticity. Without knowing the full story about Alanis's objections I will say that I found the film to be empathic, honest, warm, respectful, and valuable. And just a fucking well made doc.
I have so many thoughts and feelings about the film. I could write a book about it, honestly.
For now I'll just say that Alanis's music has transformed me and this movie is a wonderful companion to the music. I fucking loved it.

Listening to Under Rug Swept now and I just can't believe the craft and maturity of the record.
Alanis is the greatest lyricist of her generation.

Watched half of this the other night and really enjoyed it. I didn't realize how young she was when she made JLP. When I was 15 everyone older than me seemed 35.

Re: Alanis
Just finished it. I thought it was a nice study of that time in her life. I had already known of her start as another Debbie Gibson/Tiffany. Didn’t really know how successful she had been in that arena, tho. This definitely shed some light on that.
I know we all kinda bust Joe’s balls a bit about her, but Jagged Little Pill was definitely in my top 5 albums I listened to for the first couple of years it was out. I had never heard lyrics that were so open and honest and yet so simple at the same time. Still haven’t. I’ve not bought anything of hers since her third album but going by that newer song she sang on the Tonight Show, she’s lost none of her writing prowess.
Of course, part of her appeal to guys like me back then was she was smoking hot as well as a great artist. And she’s still gorgeous. But I will say she was most beautiful when she was holding her daughter and singing that song about her and her brothers.
The section where she talks about being a victim was tough. I felt angry and sad and just bad for her. It’s obviously something she’s still working on.
The documentary as a whole, with its concert clips and videos and the songs from that album really put me in a headspace of that era and I definitely felt some of the same vibes I did then. Every now and again I’ll watch or listen to something that takes me back to that time of my life that, looking back, was so fertile with possibilities and I’ll have those feelings again. And I’m thankful for that which took me back, if only for a little bit. And that album and watching this documentary certainly did just that.

I watched the Linda Ronstadt doc after I finished this one. A lot of amazing parallels between the two of them.
