I really, really, really, really would love it if Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire turned out not to be in this at all, if only because the fallout from the fans not getting something they were never promised and were repeatedly, explicitly assured wouldn't happen would be absolutely hilarious

It's good! Most sirprisingly, it works! Almost entirely.
THE GOOD
- The cast is great
- Pacing works really well; it's like 3 hours long but moves at a very natural and enjoyable clip
- The central questions the movie seeks to answer are "is nostalgia inherently bad? Can we brazenly mine nostalgia for those sweet dopamine hits while also crafting a worthwhile story?" The answers are "TBD" and "Sure!"
- If you ever found yourself thinking "man, I hate what the MCU did to Spider-Man as a character," this film makes great strides towards correcting that.
- The ending is genuinely affecting on an emotional level, stupid plot contrivances and all (see below)
THE BAD
- Some of the dialogue is beyond embarrassing; of all the MCU films, this is the most "well THAT just happened!" that wasn't directed by Whedon.
- The way the film sets up the central conflict is extremely flimsy
- The CGI for ... certain characters ... was AWFUL
- So many of the third act's supposedly insurmountable problems are fixed with quick, throwaway solutions, it starts to feel really silly
- At several points, this film feels like a collection of scenes of characters you can't believe are actually meeting and interacting with each other, but the actors themselves feel like they're shooting in different rooms and edited together after. Lot of cutting back-and-forth between solo medium shots, so much so that it's noticeable
- Near the end there are several moments where the action comes to a screeching halt so certain characters can do a little comedy routine. It's cute, but it feels completely extraneous.
- To be expected from a Jon Watts MCU film at this point, but the movie is completely unremarkable and generic from a visual standpoint
- You know how people talk about post-credits scenes being just "ads for future movies"?... yeah...
Anyway, it was a good time, I enjoyed it a lot, and spent a long portion of the movie thinking "man my little siblings are gonna love this."

Dafoe is really, really good in this. One of the film's great pleasures is seeing him gleefully chew up the scenery in the Goblin role again, without a big Power Rangers mask covering his face

Also, Eddie being in that universe makes zero sense. He doesn't know Parker. This is a reach but does Venom have multidimensional travel capability? Does the symbiote know Parker from another universe?
Why are MJ and Ned rejected from MIT due to their association with Spider-Man, but Flash Thompson isn't? When Flash wrote a whole-ass book about their supposed friendship?? He even gave a copy of the book to the admissions lady!
Also how does Electro being there make sense? He doesn't know Spider-Man's identity, right? In fact he even expresses surprise that Spider-Man isn't black
