Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Glad you like In the Wee Small Hours! I'm not sure if there's an instrumental version out there, but the good news is a lot of those songs are standards and I'm sure you could piece together a fantastic collection of that album as performed by other jazz artists. I cannot recommend this version of "It Never Entered My Mind" by Miles Davis enough, even though the performance is really made by the pianist Red Garland (whose light-as-a-feather solo is among my favorites in all of jazz).
There are also dozens of great versions of "Mood Indigo" (many by Ellington, the original composer, but also a great one by Charles Mingus), and Nels Cline does a really nice version of "Glad to Be Unhappy" (maybe my favorite song on Small Hours) on Lovers.
There are quite a few Sinatra albums that linger in the same headspace -- Jorge listed some great ones, to which I'd also add Where Are You and September of My Years, the latter of which I think is the crown jewel of Sinatra's career, and I'd disagree that No One Cares is inferior to the others listed (if it is, it's only marginally so and up against some pretty stiff competition). That said, I don't think any carve out the exact same sonic space as Wee Small Hours; there's just a warmth and crackle to that album that really feels authentic and present -- I'm not sure I've ever heard an album composed entirely of other people's songs be felt and rendered so personally by a singer. One of the greats.
